I just found out that Joyce Carol Oates will be at the university where I work in May. I want to read a couple of her books beforehand. What is your favorite Joyce Carol Oates book? What would you suggest I read?

Hi Terri,
As usual, I'm going to crow about 'We Were The Mulvaneys' :)
'Blonde' and 'Dear Husband,' (the latter being a short story collection) are really cool, too.
Hope you enjoy her stories! (By the way, I envy you lots ... especially so come May.)
Cheers,
Claudine

Thanks Claudine - I'm heading to the library this morning. I've read a couple of her books, but it's been a long time ago - don't know why I haven't read more - I liked her. I'm especially excited about this because we are a state research university so we don't usually get such well-known writers and artists here - mostly scientists!
Hope you enjoy her visit, Terri. I'm a fan but I haven't met her or attended her talks. (Perhaps you could let us know how it is afterwards?)
Well, I haven't actually read any of her books, so my opinion is largely invalid here. But, I keep hearing raves about We Were the Mulvaneys and have recently bought it add to my to-read list.....after I posted my response, I saw the date as March 30th. A bit late on the jump here! So, how was her talk and did you end up reading any of her books beforehand? =)
