Anna Shumaker (annashu) Alright, so after applying to ten (!!!) grad schools which was an ordeal in itself I've finally heard back from all of them and was only accepted to FSU in Tallahassee. I've been wait listed several places but for the moment it looks like my future is in Tallahassee. While glad that I'm going to be in a program next year, I'm a little panicked about moving my whole life across the country for at least 2-3 years.
This is where you friends come in, could anyone give me some pointers about the area? Is there anywhere I should avoid when looking for a place to live? Should I start getting a place squared away now or wait until closer to to start of the term? Am I crazy? Really think anything about the area would be great since I am beyond unfamiliar and won't have a chance to visit (EEK).
Thanks in advance!

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I've never been to Tallahassee so I can't help you with that. But I think you should really, really try to visit the school/city before you find an apartment, etc.

If it really isn't possible for you to visit maybe see if you can find people through Facebook who go to FSU and message them asking about the school/city? Or see if the school could refer you to a current student to talk to?

Sashana I think you should get an apartment sooner than later. Tallahassee has two huge state universities (FSU and FAMU) so the good places go fast. I have a friend who goes to FAMU and she has already signed her lease for the fall semester. Like Jen said, it'd be nice if you could visit before hand. I’ve only been there once to visit some friends on both campuses so what I can say is that it’s a city that’s really in-between. The businesses and buses close really early but there is always some activity going on because it is a college town.

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Thanks! I would love to visit but and already stressed about $$ for the move that I can't really justify spending half of that on a plane ticket for a visit. Through my department I've gotten in touch with a few students who are currently in my future program so they should be helpful, and I have some connections fairly close (at least much closer than I am). Basically I'm just putting as many feelers out as possible to get as much info as I can. Even thought I'm 28 and generally well composed this whole process has made me discombobulated, like an 18 year old getting ready to go off on my own all over again (except without the excitement about getting away from my parents)
