This ties in with our discussion of women in the 21st century that we posted in the commentary for the story "Jayne." When Saunders'female character makes the comment here in describing a strip club to Jane Austen through her letter, she says "where women dance around bare-breasted in a suggestive manner. You wouldn't believe it, but this was Women's Rights in the 20th century."
I didn't get what the character was saying, was this a slam to the Women's movement? Or simply a rather different interpretation of the whole thing. Obviously, the Women's Movement did not point us women to the grand opportunity of performing in strip clubs. In essence, we have had the opportunity to do similar work as that for many centuries throughout history.
