LucidVerity (faruques) Peace be upon to you,

I tried searching for an 'introduce yourself' discussion, but my searching did not yield me any results, so I thought I would try starting one!

Greetings to my sisters and brothers in Islam and in humanity. My name is Saleha. Fortunately, I stumbled upon GoodReads just in time for deciding to get back into the habit of reading after so long.

I will recommend to you all a great book written by a Muslim author. Perhaps many of you have heard about it, but I recently finished reading it and I was left impressed.

Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty

Looking forward to your recommendations!

As Salamu Alaikum,

My name is Bodrul Hussain, based in London, at the moment I am reading a few Economics and Management related books but around 6 months ago I read a very interesting book by Naima B Roberts called 'From My Sisters Lips' http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/89... , it was very interesting and certainly allowed me to understand things from the viewpoint of those who are new to Islam.

Thanks a lot.

message 14: by Al (new)

Al (scullygolightly) Hello! I hope it's okay for me to introduce myself here - I just joined this group so I'm not quite sure of the dynamics. I hope my message finds everyone well. My name is Alisha, I'm a university student, and I'm hoping to become more acquainted with Islam and Islamic literature. I'm also hoping to learn Arabic, soon, as part of a community project I'm becoming involved in to help asylum seekers from across the world improve their English and feel more at home in my town. I would love to see book recommendations from others and hopefully get to know you all a little.

Al (scullygolightly) Brittany, that would be great! I am a little busy studying for exams at the moment, but once the 17th of May comes, I'll be free to read whatever I like (I will be continuing with The Noble Qur'an of course). Could I add you as a friend?

message 18: by Al (new)

Al (scullygolightly) Unfortunately not! I have a translation provided to me by a UK based organisation, in turn recommended to me by a practicing friend. Hopefully I'll be able to read in Arabic one day!

message 25: by Feather (new)

Feather Stone (feather_stone) | 1 comments Looking forward to meeting readers interested in a novel I've written and soon to be published. My blog is http://www.featherstoneauthor.wordpre... and my facebook is fsauthor, twitter @featherwrites. My second novel, Forbidden, is about a devout, albeit moderate, Muslim police captain. Here is the synopsis: Screams of terror and gunfire echo within the walls of a compound. The horrific massacre of fifteen Americans forces two government officials of The Republic of Islamic Provinces and Territories to plot a cover-up. The secret is thrust into the hands of a ruthless police captain, Hashim Sharif. Frustrated with his corrupt superiors, he covertly searches for forensic evidence. If his loyalty is questioned, an unmarked grave awaits him in the desert.
The gates of hell crash down on Sharif when he is ordered to execute the one survivor – Eliza MacKay. It’s unthinkable to become the same gutter vermin he hunts in Samarra’s dark streets. Placing MacKay out of sight inside his apartment, he risks the wrath of Allah. Because of her struggle with PTSD, Sharif fears she is a risk to his family's safety.
Hit men, the CIA, and his government have Sharif and MacKay in their cross hairs. Justice may never be served. Even so, he cannot commit an act most forbidden – treason. His family’s honor would be forever lost. With his Muslim morals and his life on the line, Sharif becomes the beast his enemies dread.
He’s tortured by his deepening passion for Eliza. If escape is possible, love will only get in the way. Or will it save them?
I am looking for beta readers who are interested in posting a review of Forbidden. Thank you

It’s Like Streams In Sand, available on Amazon. It might still be in a free promotion for ebooks. If it’s not your cup of tea, I can look in my library for other reads. All the best.

What is the central theme of this book? I have seen the contents page and am trying to understand the underlying theme of the book

message 34: by Kamal (new)

Kamal Barghout (kamalbarghout) | 5 comments Hi Molvi,
I am basically discussing Islam as a Muslim who was raised as Muslim but trying to understand the mind of an extremist. In other words, for an average Muslim like myself, what is it that I don't understand but an extremist realised it, hopefully wrongly, that made him radicalize.

message 35: by Molvi (new)

Molvi | 9 comments Mod
Kamal
The point that needs to be made is that "extremist" and "extremism" are relative concepts. I may be considered an extremist by someone who is very "liberal". People may even be "extemist' liberals. So lets not use these terms and create straw-men which we then break down without actually knowing exactly who we are referring to.

message 36: by Kamal (new)

Kamal Barghout (kamalbarghout) | 5 comments I agree

Molvi | 9 comments Mod
I trust that you will edit and revise your book in this case

message 38: by Kamal (new)

Kamal Barghout (kamalbarghout) | 5 comments oh, brother, may be I misunderstood you. But where in the book do I say you and I who fear Allah and pray five times a day..etc. are extremists? I don't think the west (liberals) call us extremists because we are devoted Muslims. So, are you suggesting that there are no (extremists) among us Muslims? The kind of extremism I am talking about is when the Prophet chastised those who want to fast forever and pray all day and night and not marry women, and said to them, "I pray and quit, fast and quit and marry women". In other words the Prophet called those who do that "extremists". I don't really care what the"liberals" call us, devout and pious Muslims. We know ourselves. we are not extremists. we are pious. If the liberals don't understand us, we understand ourselves.
