Kathy | 14 comments What better way to twiddle our collective thumbs waiting for the next book than discussing who moves us the most and why?

For me, Bree is my favorite. She is a strong woman, a complete spitfire and hothead, loving, passionate, but also has a good moral compass. Despite the rough times, she has the wherewithal to do what needs to be done (like offing Stephen on her terms).

So, who is your favorite AND WHY?

message 2: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle_blum) | 12 comments I think Claire is a great female character too. They are different kinds of strong... like Bree can be hard-headed to the point of stupidity. Claire usually stays level-headed. But they both get things done and don't rely just on others.

message 3: by Woogie (new)

Woogie | 9 comments Such a hard question to answer! While I can't put anyone above my beloved Jamie, I also love Murtaugh, Roger and Young Ian, for different, yet similar reasons.
Bree grew on me in Voyager and Drums. The traits of her real father really started to come through.

message 4: by Jessica B (new)

Jessica B | 2 comments I recently just finished reading Drums of Autumn and Young Ian made a huge impression on me. He is brave and smart and cares so deeply for others. Although he doesn't top Jamie he made a huge jump in my favourite characters list.

message 5: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle_blum) | 12 comments I love Young Ian in drums of Autumn. He's definitely on my top 5 characters list.

message 6: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cynthiadonne) | 2 comments I am so totally in love in Jamie that I don't believe there is a more wonderful character anywhere. I can't look at a man in a kilt without feeling a little giddy! :)

message 7: by Heidi (last edited Jan 07, 2009 06:58PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) Jamie remains my number one character (although he's only half of the love story so props to Claire)... all I've got to say is "what a man."

message 8: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (yohan19761) | 1 comments Oh Jamie is my favorite. In fact he is very close to surpassing my all time favorite male character, Mr. Darcy.

message 9: by Heidi (last edited Jan 11, 2009 09:01AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) I totally agree Yvonne... as as I read the books (I'm on the sixth)... he only gets better with age!

message 10: by Ms. Vicki (new)

Ms. Vicki Smith | 14 comments Hmmm...Mr. Darcy or Jamie. That is a difficult choice. I would probably pick Jamie, love the highlander hunk type. ;D

message 11: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments I have to say that Jamie is THE MAN of all time! His character seems to have such depth. Claire, in the last couple of books, doesn't seem to move forward in any interesting ways...

message 12: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 16 comments I was so excited to find this group after finishing Outlander last night. I just loved it, and started Dragonfly in Amber after finishing Outlander. I only got to about page 25 when sleep interrupted my reading. I hate when that happens. Of course, I had been staying up until 1 or 2 reading Outlander the previous two nights. I would have to say that after only reading one book, Jamie is my favorite, with Claire a close second. Their love story is just so awesome. Diana Gabaldon can really write a love scene, can't she?

message 13: by Ms. Vicki (new)

Ms. Vicki Smith | 14 comments DG is awesome. I could read those scenes over and over again. They're so romantic!

Kathy wait until you read the rest of the books, they just get better and better!!!! I am just finishing book #6 and will re-read all of them all over again starting at Outlander until the new one comes out!!!! I am addicted!!!

message 15: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 16 comments What I find so interesting is that fans of the Outlander series talk about reading the series more than once. With the length of each book in the series, I'd say that's a hearty endorsement indeed. Didna ye think so, lassies and laddies?

message 16: by Woogie (new)

Woogie | 9 comments Kathy, you are verra right! :) I have already read the first 3 books twice in 6 months (and the other three once so far). I only discovered them this past July.

So cool! I tried to find the CD to Outlander at our local book exchange store, but no luck. I just want to hear the audio to hear the Scottish accent and phrases.

message 18: by Ms. Vicki (new)

Ms. Vicki Smith | 14 comments I got the audio book at Audible.com. I love the accents too.

I started ready the series in October of 08 and am finishing book #6..I have to reread, for one reason being I would miss the characters too much( i don't think I can stop cold turkey! I may need a 12 step program!) and second, after being on some other blogs there are little things that I think I have missed and can now go back and revisit. I have watched a few of Diana's interviews on utube and she is sooo interesting!!
What a gift!

message 20: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments Hey Everyone! My favorite character is also Jaimie, but I really liked Roger til his spiritual thing. I didn't get it.

I also like Young Ian, I hope ther is some development there in the next book.

Women character favorite is definately Claire. Her frank speach including the modern references crack me up.

message 21: by CaliGirlRae (new)

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) I'm with Cynthia, I just finished book 1 and I'm checking out all the Outlander sites, blogs, vids and podcasts and finding some interesting perspectives on the series! I can't wait to dive into book 2.

As for my fave character. Definitely Jamie. Now I see what all the readers were talking about! :-D

there are some videos on U-Tube that individuals have put together using clips with Gerald Butler as Jamie... oh my gosh !!! this man is Jamie... especcially the clips they have of him in his role from the movie Attila.

I sort of felt sorry for poor Roger..seems he could never measure up to Jamie..maybe that is why he went the spiritual route?

message 24: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments Probably but I still was disapointed. Do you think he will continue with this now that they are at Lolleybrauch? Or will he go back to teaching?

I am on chapter 57 of abosaa so I haven't gotten to that part yet I will have to let you know. I thought that Roger was going to be a much stronger character. I also hope that young Ian is developed more. Do you have the Outlander companion? I'm thinking about purchasing that when I start rereading.
It's so nice to discuss..none of my friends will read this series..I think the length of the books scare them off!

Conny | 2 comments Cynthia wrote: Do you have the Outlander companion? I'm thinking about purchasing that when I start rereading.

Hello Cynthia,

being totally obsessed, I bought the companion and found it a great additional source for the books. Some questions you may have (such as Frank's intentions etc. or Lord John Grey's certain actions) are answered.

I have often wondered why/how Jamie could became such good friends with John Grey...after the Capt. Randall abuse and ordeal? Any thoughts?

Well, I think one of the reasons is that Lord John is extremely honorable and honest towards Jamie. As a very honest man himself, I think Jamie appreciates this. I am liking the jealousy fits between him and Claire quite a bit. Even though those are delicate scenes, DG has a knack of conveying it perfectly.

I continually go back to the series and reread my favorites parts again and gain. The characters strike chords in the reader that makes it like listening to your favorite song over and over.

message 32: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments I don't have the Companion myself but have ofton thought of buying it, I think that there is so much going on in the stories that I would like to read a little insight as I go along. Also I would like to get correct pronunciation on the Gealic terms. Then I feel I could be more accurate in my voice of Jaimie in my head.

I guess I don't undeerstand why men are so drawn to Jaimie. but if women are I suppose men would be too. but he doesn't come across like someone interested in them to me so I have wondered where they feel that they would be able to come on to him. Was this a prevelant problem in the time period or do you feel DG is just covering all of the bases in sexuality?

Maybe DG just wants to convey how Jamie's magnetism reaches across both sexes. I would think that these men who are attracted to Jamie would be afraid to approach him sexually..since he is such a manly man? I was shocked that Jamie would continue a friendship with John Gray ( not to mention allow him to raise his son) just for the mere fact that the Randall incident still haunts Jamie and was probably the most traumatic thing that had ever happended to him mentally and physically. It may well have been a prevelant problem back in the day. It was accepted to some extent in other ancient periods..Romans, Greeks? I need to go brush up on my history. For some reason that relationship bothers me.

message 34: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 16 comments I ordered the companion book from Amazon and should receive it this week. I'll let you know if I like it.

message 35: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments I agree that Jamie would probably have been retisent about having Lord John raise his son. But I have a neice from the Marshall Islands, they tend to share their children there. If someone cant raise their child a friend or family member takes them and raises them as their own. Maybe this was the case in the 18th century. He may not have been interested in Lord John but he did trust him. Enough to raise the child, though he didn't really have a choice. Jaimie left thinking he would never see the child again.

I'm at the part in Dragon Fly where Claire and Jaimie have just reunited after the lose of their baby and his imprisonment because of the dule with Randall. DG certainly describes what the feelings are about losing a baby and the depression that goes with it. From personal experience it is very much like that. Though my experience was yrs. ago.

I agree with you that DG does a very good job at describing the feelings of loosing a child, I too have had that personal experience ...the chapter brings back memories.
Very interesting comment regarding the Marshall Islands!

message 37: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments I feel that Jaimie is quite modern in his thinking for the 18th century. It surprises me at times when he apologizes to Claire. Sometimes he is definately in the wrong like when he treats Claire as a prisoner and tears her dress in front of his men in Dragon Fly. It is shocking that he would treat his wife in such a way, yet when he apologizes you can see his side of the situation.

message 38: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments I also have been very shocked at some of the things that Jamie has done to make his point. Especially how he dealt with Brianna and the rape issue. I was unsure why he was being so brutal and physical with her...but now understand that that was the only way she was going to understand that she could not have physically prevented the event..however, she could have not gone to SB to begin with,,she was not very smart in that move!( But how else was GB going to weave SB into the story) Brianna and Claire are alike in many ways; as they act sometimes in haste and their rash behaviors get them into trouble. ( Claire seemed to settled down after the first couple of books,,she apppeared to get wiser with age)
Jamie has always been portrayed as a man that thinks things through. He seems to always have a purpose behind his actions.

message 39: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) I love reading everyone's thought... but can you keep the spoilers out of the threads? Some people are just reading the series and I for one was very disappointed by someone blurting out a big time spoiler in the one I'm reading now... would hate to have someone else's first read of one of the series be ruined... thanks!

message 40: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments Sorry if I spoiled anything for anyone. I'll go to the spoilers line.

I just love to hate Jack Randall. He is one horrible person!

message 41: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments sorry if I spoiled anything also.

message 42: by Amy Leggio (new)

Amy Leggio I am a newbie here and just started reading Outlander. I am almost done with it and LOVE it. I am so hooked that I can not put it down. I look forward to starting the next book.

message 43: by Ms. Vicki (new)

Ms. Vicki Smith | 14 comments Welcome Amy, to the Outlanderoholics group. The addiction only gets worse, and the last book will leave you in withdrawals until the next one comes out. :-)

the series just gets better and better! Jamie is the PERFECT man. I would travel back in time for a man like that.( with hair products in tow however!!!)

message 47: by Amy Leggio (last edited Feb 27, 2009 12:06PM) (new)

Amy Leggio I agree, I would travel back in time for Jamie also but I would bring a tooth brush. LOL

message 49: by Angela (new)

Jamie is my favorite,by the way.

message 50: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) The only thing about looking foward is that there's so much details that when I've done it, it's hard to get the ending... I stopped after the second one... now I savor them instead!
