I'm BACK!
And I have a book recommendation. Maybe for the next time around? It's this one:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Thousand-Au...
I got a copy at Bookworm and read the first five pages - and I'm hooked.
Don't read too much on Amazon and ruin your innocence for an "informed" vote on it. Instead, trust me and then blame me later if it starts to suck!

That looks interesting, and it's definitely a popular book. So I'd say there's a good chance that most of us would enjoy it!
Y'all are welcome to join me and Adam. We are currently reading "The Lost City of Z," by David Grann. (At least, I think Adam is reading it! This one is non-fiction, about a bold explorer who disappeared in the Amazon in 1925, while looking for purported ruins of a complex civilization.)
I'm almost done with Lost City. It's definitely an interesting book.

I'm really liking this book. I think I'm somewhere around pg 100+!
Williwaw, have you ever read "The Last Season"? Similar story about an author searching for someone who disappeared into the wilderness, but set in California in modern times. One of my favorites!

Yes, "Lost City of Z" is easy to read. Unfortunately, I've had multiple distractions and I've been stuck on page 260 for about five days. It sort of spoils the enjoyment when the continuity is disrupted like that!
With any luck, I'll be able to finish up "Z" tonight.
I've never heard of "The Last Season." Sounds good, though!

Stuck & likely giving up. Had two long airplane rides & was not bored enough to stick with it. :(
Finished a few days ago too -- Williwaw's review is a good summary.
I definitely enjoyed reading about Fawcett whom I had never heard of before, but, I was a little disappointed with the last few chapters -- they seemed to be a letdown. I think if I had already read anything about Fawcett this would have just been a lot of redundant information. I guess I was really hoping for a really cool ending where the author found out what *actually* happened.

"And so now, reader, I've finally discovered what really happened to Fawcett, and it's an amazing tale. I've got to write fast though, because they're catching up to me. Hopefully these few crumbling pages will survive if I rubberband them tightly to Lindy's claw. He's always been lucky before; godspeed little pigeon!
Down to 4 bullets now, for the carbine, but I've got my bowie knife and a few drops left of that magical elixir that gives me superpowers. Now if I can just fight my way back to the obelisk and enlist the peaceful Tyrannosauraii in my cause...
Hear their drums now, no time! More next time.."

So have we ceased having discussion threads separate from advocacy, and was there really a conversation worth having in regards to The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon?
I think we ought to give each book a thorough conversation even if some didn't like it. We shoule have an official book club convocation. A problem is that organizing THAT with this cat herd is... ...troublesome.

I had planned on staying out of the Book Advocacy game this time around, because my recommendations have turned out to be less than stellar.
But if nobody else is going to step into the fray, then wtf??????
Here's my recommendation: "The Lost City of Z," by David Grann. I read an essay in The New Yorker which was, apparently, later incorporated into the book. It was fabulous.
Lemme know what y'all think, or nominate your own damned books! Or just "eat a bag of dicks," as our friend Kevin Shawley likes to say.
