I know there isn't many of us yet, but we seem to all read along similar lines.

So I was thinking one book a month can't be hard, if you each wanted to nominate and then we could make a poll and let you pick the book for the month to read.

There would be no obligation to read it, but I think some book groups have five books a month and it's insane! I couldn't keep up along with reading whatever I wanted to read.

So this one would be for May.

:-)

Thought I'd add a couple of almost 'rules'.

Nominate the 1st in a series or stand-alone novel only.

You can each recommend up to two novels you've either read or want-to read.

Post your nomination by Sunday 22nd April so the polling can take place across the weekend, ready to start on Tuesday 1st May.

Heather B (heatherbenson) I agree, some groups make it really hard to follow and participate because of how much they expect you to read. I like just having to read one book for a group per month.

Is there a specific genre you want the books to fall under?

One book a month works for me.

It would probably be best if we picked a stand alone novel or the first in a series. I hate reading books out of sequence.

I'm open to books from any genre.

Matt Hageman Hi, i'm new here and joined because I am friends with Gavin on goodreads. If i'm allowed I would love to participate it a group read with you guys for the month of may. My main interests are fantasy books, but I am open to anything.

I agree, I don't participate in a lot of group reads because some groups pick novels that are in the middle of a series. I don't ever read out of order, it would drive me crazy.

Sure! You're very welcome to participate! If you want to recommend a fantasy book, to read, please do!

I don't want to dictate what we read.

Me either! I agree with you about series! They get annoying for people joining.

Therefore my suggestion is you recommend ANYTHING you want to read as long as it's first in a series or a stand alone novel. I'm NOT doing to dictate genre, as long as you don't pick a poetry book because then I may have to kill people. I ABHOR poetry, but if you do I'll put it as part of the monthly poll.

PLEASE CAN I HAVE ALL RECOMMENDATIONS BY FRIDAY 27TH MAY, which gives you three days then to vote on a poll of which novel you want to read!

Enjoy.

Matt Hageman I am not sure what you guys think of this because it is the start of a long series, but has anyone read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series? I am not sure what the first book is, but this is just a suggestion.

The Eye of the World is the first one in the series, I believe from my quick Google search.

I'm not really fussy, I'll give anything a try!

Yes first in a fourteen book series. I'm sure the shortest of the books still tops 800 plus pages. I've been reading this series for the last 13 or 14 years!.

I'll tentatively nominate two books:
Cinder by Marissa Meyer-A sci-fi, romance, fairytale re-telling all rolled into one.
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder-A YA fantasy book. I've had this one on the shelf for a long time.

I have no idea why my links do not work like everyone elses. They get you to the correct page but Goodreads does not seem to recognize them. That's what happens I suppose when you learn this computer stuff on your own using the trial and error process.

WOWZA! That's a lot to read. 13 or 14 years?

You can keep it as a recommendation if you want, Matt, or not? Up to you!

I've wanted to read Poison Study for a while now too. I've heard of Cinder, but never really noticed it!

Yep and to make matters worse the last book in the series I read was book 11 way back in 2006. The author of the series died before he could complete it and Brandon Sanderson was brought in to finish it. I will have to re-read the lot before I can read the final three books, I can hardly remember a thing that happened.

I gave Poison Study to my sister to read years ago. She loved it and has since read everything Maria V. Snyder has wrote. I have no idea why I have never got round to reading it before now.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh dear. I hate when you read a series so long ago that you have to re-read them to remember everything. Especially when they're really long.

When did Brandon Sanderson take over the series?

message 13: by Gavin (new)

Robert Jordan died in 2007 and the first Brandon Sanderson book in the series was published in 2009.
I believe Jordan was able to outline his vision for the major plots in the final books of the series and it was just a case of Sanderson writing them. The Sanderson books have received a very positive reception from the fans.

message 14: by Matt (new)

Matt Hageman Okay the Robert Jordan Series might be too long so how about a stand alone book. I know Gavin has read this before so maybe it is a bad idea, but what about Elantris by: Brandon Sanderson?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson.

It's your choice what you want to recommend, because then there will be a poll before next month for everybody to decide the book they would like to read for the month! The one with the highest votes will be the monthly read.

message 16: by Matt (new)

Matt Hageman Yes that is the book I would like to put in the poll.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

May recommendations so far ..

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder Poison Studyby Maria V. Snyder

Do you nominate a book as well Olivia?.

I know both Matt and myself have no previous experience with group reads, so we will have to follow your example.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I can nominate a book! I just haven't as of yet.

What I'll do is post a poll for everybody to vote on so you can pick one book you desire to read out of the list of nominations. Either yours or somebody elses.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

My May recommendations.

Naked in Death (In Death, #1) by J.D. Robb Naked in Death by Nora Roberts

Divine By Mistake (Partholon, #1) by P.C. Cast Divine By Mistake by P.C. Cast

message 21: by Matt (new)

Matt Hageman I have look at the descriptions for all five books, and I'm up to reading any of them.

I'm in agreement, although you probably know I love Naked in Death. haha.

message 23: by Matt (new)

Matt Hageman Can we start the voting soon because I need time to go out and buy the book before we start reading it.

Yeah, I'm going to sort it out today! I was going to say that I'm changing it because I had the exact same thought! haha.

I already own the four books that were recorded in audio. The exception is Divine By Mistake by P.C. Cast.
No shocker. I have voted for my own nomination, Poison Study.
