J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Since the main topic of this group is Christian horror and speculative fiction, what book recommendations do you all have?

message 2: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Hey J.S. I would recommend Ted Dekker's The Boneman's Daughters. It was great!

That's my current favorite of his. I recommend it, too!

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) I'm curious as to why it received lower ratings than his other books. I don't want to read any negative reviews of it, though, because reviews like that tend to get nasty. Do you think people were put off by the violence?

message 5: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Frank Peretti's The Visitation was good, too. So far it's the only Peretti book I've read, but I've got This Present Darkness sitting on my shelf waiting to be read.

Possibly, I know I had to put it down a couple of times. It was kind of strong for Dekker but I love his writings. Another favorite of mine is The Priests Graveyard and Emmanuels Veins.

Lol! I had to set it down a couple times to regain my composure. Did you read the Author's Note at the end where he talked about how he got the inspiration to write BoneMan's Daughters? I was thinking, Holy crap, don't mess with Ted or he'll write a novel about you. If I were the perp who messed with his daughter I would be very, very scared.

Tracy No Js, I didn't read that. I will have to look it up at the library tomorrow.

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Shameless self-promotion: I wrote a Christian SF short story called Vapors that is only 99 cents on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Vapors-ebook/dp...

It's my first truly "indie" project. We'll see how it goes!

message 10: by Dustin (new)

Dustin The Circle series is, without a doubt, some the very best books I've ever read. And that's saying a LOT!

I've still only read Black. Every time I go to Barnes and Noble or Family Christian stores they don't have the rest of the series in stock. I think it's a conspiracy. ;)

Well not to boast or anything, but I actually own the epic edition, which includes the original ending and alternate ending to Green, as well as a bring interview with Ted, and all 4 novels in 1 complete volume. As you can imagine, it's really quite convenient!

Sounds like it weighs a ton... lol But I love books that combine a series into one convient book.

I'll just say this, Ted's new trilogy with Tosca Lee is just as good (and gritty) as the Circle series, and that does say quite a huge deal!

message 17: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) I'm working on Ted's Heaven trilogy. I read Heaven's Wager and now I'm into When Heaven Weeps. READ THEM. I COMMAND YOU. ;)

Yeah, it is quite heavy..but really convenient.

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Has anyone else read Desperation by Stephen King? Of the books of his I've read, I'd say this is the most "Christian." It scared the crap out of me, too. :]

message 20: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I love Desperation, J.S!

message 21: by Krisi (new)

Krisi Keley | 2 comments I loved Desperation too, J.S. - one of my favorite Stephen King books, along with The Stand.

Dibily Do | 4 comments This wouldn't fall into recommendations but I finished a short excerpt of a Christian Horror book that I want to complete:

http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/3...

What do you think?

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore I haven't read through all the posts in this thread, but I wanted to ask if anyone knew whether or not Demon A Memoir by Tosca Lee is considered christian horror?

I wouldn't consider it horror at all; I'd say it's more along the lines of speculative fiction since it presents the "what-if" scenario of a demon appearing to a man and talking about his life. There isn't anything scary in it, if that's what you're asking.

Jason (jokers_knight_out) | 58 comments Mod
Demon's not horror, but it does get provocative.
As for Desperation, that's on my to-read list.

message 26: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Hi, Jason-

I think you'd like Desperation a lot...particularly because of David Carver's character.

I loved Desperation it was a good book IMO. I liked the Characters a lot.

message 28: by Dibily Do (new)

Dibily Do | 4 comments I have a question about Desperation:

What about a 15 year old reading it with an unsure mom about Steven King (basically she doesn't like the normal: Sex/Profanity in secular books.) Is this a decent book to consider?

I don't remember there being any sex in Desperation, but you can pretty much guarantee that any Stephen King book is going to have profanity in it. :]

message 30: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Yeah, I don't recall there being any sex scenes in Desperation, but there's definitely profanity in SK's work.

message 31: by Jason (new)

Jason (jokers_knight_out) | 58 comments Mod
Yeah, I remember there being profanity from the first page on, as well as racial cliches by the stereotyping sheriff, etc. You didn't even get done with the first spoken sentence before it happens. Anyway, I honestly haven't read it all the way, so it's on my list for a good reason.

message 32: by Ardy (new)

Ardy Ardy (ardybooks) | 3 comments Loved Desperation. There is a short scene with some sexual activity, but it happens as a result as contact with the demon's power. I will agree that Desperation, and The Stand, are two of the most Christian horror books out there. Also loved the Exorcist. I found it to be an interesting comment on where our society has gone. Hundreds of years ago, anything psychological was blamed on demonic possession, and most of time it was just an actual disorder like Tourette's or epilepsy, but nowadays anything that is obviously demonic in origin is explained away using psychology.
As for Christian Horror, I highly recommend Peretti's Visitation and The Oath.

The Exorcist is one I desperately want to get a hold of. I'm pretty sure it will be far better than the movie was.
