JF/NR 2012
Is it time for a new thread Dan? 2,328 is a lot on the last one, 47 screens worth! Yikes! I'll copy my post from there just now here and join you!
JF audio (stellar!!)Restless in the Grave
NR Kindle Then Again loving this Diane Keaton memoir
NR hardback Cat's Claw not sure if I am going to finish this one. I think it was Melodie who mentioned the third person style being off putting. I agree.
NL I think this is my next audio - due dates are making me reconsider The Drop though Len Cariou reading it is very enticing.
Is it time for a new thread Dan? 2,328 is a lot on the last one, 47 screens worth! Yikes!I'd say I did it on purpose, Ann, but actually I wasn't thinking when I made it a new topic in an old folder. Oh well.
it was time for a new one way too many on the old one. still haven't finished any books but did read more of the language of flowers today so far and I think it's time to move on to something else.
NR let's call this "a sampling Sunday" I am auditioning my next print book for reading at home. The Collected Stories is one getting a test drive. The Expats: A Novel was a pickup at the library today. I should probably just pick up The Chalk Girl and finish it. The new ones are so tempting!
Ann wrote: "NR let's call this "a sampling Sunday" I am auditioning my next print book for reading at home. The Collected Stories is one getting a test drive. The Expats: A Novel was a pickup at the library to..."I have the expats for my nook haven't downloaded it yet.
J/F: The language of flowers great book. glad I finished it before the book club meeting next wednesday. I'm close to finishing a lorelei james book so hopefully I'll finish that today too.N/R: City of glass by clare on the nook My one and only by kristan higgins and hopefully will be starting guilty wives by patterson.
I saw E. L. james got on the times's 100 list. i'm so looking forward to starting that book. I'm thinking I might have to jump start it this weekend if I finish my other books. the group is starting to read it next wednesday and I know my wed, thurs & friday will be busy with appts. And I have another group read sunday. so I'm thinking it might be a good idea to jump start something. I'm sure it will be a very fast read anyway.
DonnaJo..I loved Language of Flowers, what a great book! I just started Fifty Shades of Grey on Tuesday, and wow...wish I had started it before I started my new job. It is a wild ride!
J/F: okay I'm like some of you I finished city of glass by classandra clare sometime after 1am this morning. N/R: I have started already guilty wives by patterson and my one and only by kristan higgins. today I start devil in winter by lisa kleypas and halfway to the grave by Jeanienne frost. (2 on the nook and 2 in pb) I know there is something else but can't think I was hoping to start 50 shades of grey today but since it's a group read and not starting until 25th I have some time yet even if I want to jump start it.
for those who didn't get to see E L James's interview on 20/20 the other night you can see if online at 20/20 which is what I did. she's at B&N the first tuesday in may for a book signing not sure about if she's doing a discussion too. part of me wants to go but only if it's a discussion too. but not crazy about buying the book since I'm reading it on the nook.
Liz, loved language of flowers it sure wasn't my usual type of read but I'm sure changing that alot lately with reading more epubs on the nook. I'm looking forward to the book club meeting on wednesday. from what I hear so far I think I picked a good book for the month and most enjoyed it. I would like to copy down some stuff from online about the author or other info that might make the meeting interesting.
JF Then AgainLoved it, a bit hard to read when emotionally the revelations from Diane's Mom's journals almost did me in a few times. I recommend it.
NRThe Chalk Girl
I am so glad I am picking this one back up, wish I had a day off from work to finish it!
I'm still overbooked. need to spend more time with reading and less time online or going out. should I say last year 56 books read at this point for the year already and this year 33 ugh I just looked it up to compare and didn't realize it was that bad. what is happening to me. I'm so behind. Did to get my reading mojo on track. books are taken me longer than they should. Now I'm depressed how am I going to get to my book goal this year and again go into the shore reading contest this summer.
I just finished The Drop and I found myself wishing the audio wouldn't end. What a stellar entry in the Harry Bosch series! NL will either be Defending Jacob or Elegy for Eddie. I'll decide in the am, and hope to get much more read in The Chalk Girl, tonight.
JF:L.A. Outlaws by T. Jefferson Parker (mystery)Allison Murietta an alias for a history school teacher with children robs fast food establishments and decides to rob gangsters of diamonds. A rookie detective suspects this school teacher as the robber. Suzanne is on the run from the gangsters and a crooked detective. Surprise ending on this one.
Playing With Fire by Gordon Ramsay (non fiction)
This is the business book of how to purchase and run restaurants. Gordon had the drive to create menus and run a well oiled staff. Gordon's father-in-law had the business connections to make acquisitions a success. Gordon is also partners with Blackstone Private Equity, which owns the Hilton Group. Each hotel needed an experienced restaurateur, which was Ransay. His latest acquisition is a cooking school to recruit future chefs to Ramsay's standards for more restaurants he plans to own. A so-so read, interesting, but would have preferred more about stories of the people he worked with.
Tainted Breeze, The Great Hanging at Gainesville, Texas 1862 by Richard B. McCaslin (nf)
October 1, 1862 Texas State Militia arrested more than 200 alleged Unionists and brought them to Gainesville, at least 44 were hanged and others lynched in neighboring communities. Many in this northern part of Texas did not want to join the Confederacy. They had wanted the protection of nearby army forts to protect them from Indian attacks. When civil war was declared, the Union Army vacated the forts, including
Fort Belknap. Settlers were forced to join the Confederacy, which they did for their northern part of Texas, but when ordered to go east of the Mississippi many deserted and returned to their unprotected farms and families. Many overzealous leaders of the Texas Army and Militia arrested the deserters and Union sympathizers on very little evidence. They were then sentenced by a pro-Confederacy "jury".
After the war, hard feelings existed on both sides. The President declared an order to not convict anymore people, no matter what side they were on. This was to begin the process of healing for the nation. None of the culprits were found guilty and lived as free men. There is a marker in a small park in Gainesville. Author is an associate professor of history in North Carolina. A very interesting read of a little known event in Texas history.
Going to start: The Wind through the Keyhole by King
Went to the f2f book group today for my pick the language of flowers it went well. now the next book is Let the great world spin by colum McCann anyone read that book yet? One of the ladies went to listen to the author talk last night at a area college and said it was very good. I already went right up the street from where I was and bought the trade size book. I think with a book like this it might be better than reading the nook. I'm almost finished with
Halfway to the grave by jeanienne frost really enjoying this book so far.
also have devil in winter by lisa kleypas and hopefully will be starting fifty shades of grey tonight. after I finish the last 50 or so pages of the other book.

Lorraine:The T. Jefferson Parker Charlie Hood series that started with L.A. Outlawsis stellar! You have some good reading ahead of you. Highly recommend. I am trying to decide if I want the audible audio of The Wind Through the Keyhole to go along with my Kindle copy. Looking forward to it!

J/F: Halfway to the grave by jeanienne frost. great book. looking forward to the next book in the series. N/R: fifty shades of grey by James, devil in winter by Kleypas & guilty wives by Patterson.
Melodie wrote: "Donnajo wrote: "Went to the f2f book group today for my pick the language of flowers it went well. now the next book is Let the great world spin by colum McCann anyone read that book yet? One of ..."I'm with you Melodie. I think the group I'm reading the series with is combining both of her series together since some of the same characters might show. who would have thought I would be reading books like this a few years ago. And if anything when you do it with a group it gives you the push to read them faster than at least I normally would be doing even if it's 1 a month.
I just finished Winters Bone and it was such a good book. Another one that I could hardly put down. Now I need to find the movie. Not sure but think this will make my top five this year. Defending Jacob is my current audio. Another powerful book!
JF: Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. JamesNR: Winter Kill by C.J. Box
Up next...Winter's Bone Daniel Woodrell

Defending ..."Glad you enjoyed Winters Bone, Ann. I have it out from the library and now that I am back from vacation will start it, at least once I finish The Witness which was a great vacation Kindle read. I'll be interested to hear what you think of the movie since I saw it without having read the book and thought it was one of the best in 2011 (I think it was 2011).
I had planned on taking Defending Jacob on vacation but didn't want to pack a book so I have that to look forward to as well.
Great minds think alike!
Carol: I have it on the way to the hold shelf at the library. I look forward to seeing the movie depiction of Winter's Bone. Hope you had a nice vacation! There were a few minor differences between the book and the movie, but it was definitely 99% faithful to the book.

LOL. see what a little comma can or can't do?
JF Defending Jacob this was a stunning book. I went from displeasure with the audio narrator at first, to complete devotion to his spot on portrayal of the anguish of the main characters of this story. I read William Landay's Mission Flats almost ten years ago and loved it too. I won't wait so long to read The Strangler.NR
Light In Shadow annoyed that the publisher won't let me load this library loaner Kindle title to my iPhone too, so I am also reading The Wind Through the Keyhole on Kindle
NL
Not sure yet
