Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments My Mother, Valerie, has just been bought a baby Kindle by Father (Ned, if you're wondering...). She doesn't actually know but she was on the fence about buying one anyway.

(I made sure to go through the store too :D)

She doesn't really actively buy books but she does read certain authors and she does enjoy it so I hope she likes her Kindle.

She reads;

Lesley Pearse
Catherine Cookson
Mary Larkin
Maeve Binchy

Her range is limited. I'm looking for more books along those lines. Quite frankly this is a genre I never touch and have no interest in so I'm relying quite heavily on you guys for points on what to get for her.

As long as it's well written I don't care what type of book it is. If any of you freebie hunters see anything that she may like in the future, please poke me!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56524 comments I think she and my muminlaw have the same taste in novels...

I'll ring her tomorrow and ask for some titles she's enjoyed.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Thanks Patti! I've truly no idea what to get for her! I'd like a few books ready for when she gets it so she can dig in!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56524 comments Oh, you could amazon search those authors and look at the 'people who bought also bought' thingy.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Oh yeah, must do that tomorrow! thanks! now is time to go read my own!

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 7663 comments She might like Mary Stuart? Victoria Holt?

I think that she'll love Mary Jane Staples; she is similar to Catherine Cookson, she has a series of books based on one family (the Adams) and some other books that are loosely inter linked.

Hope it helps :-D

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Elle I think your Mum would like Shayne ParkinsonThe Promises to Keep series has 4 books,an excellent epic read.
Mary Fitzgeraldis also very good.
If she likes memoirs the Philip Whiteland and Harry Leslie Smith May be to her liking.
Another I would recommend is Tainted Tree
Have a look and see what you think.

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Elle just popped back to say today's Daily Deal looks like one your Mum may enjoy and the title would make it more than appropriate as first book on a Kindle gifted from you!

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Oh yes, brilliant guys

Mother now has her own wishlist - and just bought that book Sarah. Thanks so much! :D

She may like Debbie Macomber or Lilian Harry.

Debbie Macomber is american and I'm not quite sure how to describe her books - women's fiction, bit soap opera..

Lilian Harry writes historical novels set around the war years. I've only read one of hers but enjoyed it, and want to read more as some of her books are set in my home city of Portsmouth. The one that I have read and so can recommend is Tuppence to Spend.

:0)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Thanks Karen!

And my Mother does love that kind of thing. Me on the other hand couldn't be more different haha!

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I was a bit underwhelmed by Debbie Macomber, but have two or three more of hers on my kindle that I bought in sales. The Lilian Harry's will have to wait until I have some more gift vouchers as her books are around the £5 mark - not a fortune, I know, but I'm broke!

;0)

Maybe DD meant Mary Stewart..?

:0)

message 15: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I think maybe, I don't think my Mother would enjoy "Indiscreet Babysitter"

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Is your Mum going to join us here in the forum Elle?

message 18: by Elle (last edited Apr 16, 2012 04:48AM) (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I am going to make her a GR account but I severely doubt she'll participate much. She only goes on once a day after dinner to do her surveys so you might see her around then, it depends!

message 19: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments It's Mary A. Larkin btw.

She's got two profiles on here, one without the A! Fixing it now though

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments LOL! :D!

message 22: by Lyra (new)

Lyra | 34 comments maybe Joanna Trollope?

seeing the name Larkin made me wonder if she'd like The Darling Buds Of May n series. I like those myself :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8598 comments Hi Elle, my friend writes as Erin Kaye and her novels are set in NI. They're not really my sort of book but the couple I did read were well written and good stories I thought. I see they might "appeal to Maeve Binchy fans" according to the blurb, so maybe your Mother might like them. (There was a bit of S.E.X. in the ones I read fyi, don't know if that's an issue or no!) Hope she enjoys her new kindle

message 24: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Thanks Rosemary. I wouldn't know if there was sex in any of my Mothers other books but heh, I'm sure she's grown enough to tell me if she doesn't like.

:)

Lorraine | 575 comments My mum read this Elle and really enjoyed it, http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_s....
At the moment it's free as well.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56524 comments I'm reading it now Lorraine. It's very Gone With the Wind-ish.
