History, Medicine, and Science: Nonfiction and Fiction discussion

Hi to you all. I would like some suggestions/nominations for a readable history of the Thirty Years War for the intelligent novice. I tried the Oxford History and found it assumed a level of prior knowledge that I just didn't have. Over to you and thank you in advance.

Hi, Huw. The Thirty Years War, written by C.V. Wedgwood (Dame Veronica Wedgwood) in 1938 or so, is a classic. Heartily recommend. The subject is complex and of course the story stretches over (really much more than) three decades, so it isn't the kind of thing you can finish in a couple of afternoons, but it's very well done.
