Brooke (brookiereadsbookies) | 17 comments I just saw the preview for the new Edgar Allen Poe movie "The Raven" and it got me thinking about Poe stories. I know we already have May and June books picked, but I'm wondering if it would be fun to pick a few key Poe stories and discuss them prior to the movie, which looks like it will reference multiple story lines. I am planning on starting with the Murders of Rue Morgue, if anyone's interested.

Amy J. | 79 comments I'd be interested. I have the complete works of Poe and I haven't gotten around to reading much of them.

Would you two like to put this under a buddy read? Then you could start different threads for each story. Does that interest you? I also wanted to throw my hat into this one, it sounds like a great read.

Amy J. | 79 comments That sounds good to me.

Stacey Jo (st1ac2ey3) I'm new to the group. I joined some time ago and have lurked. I love Poe so I would be interested in a Poe buddy read.

I started a thread for the buddy read, but I'm not quite sure what stories people wanted to start.

Brooke proposed the idea and said she was starting with The Murders of the Rue Morgue so since it was her idea and that's where she's wanting to start, I say that's a good spot. I think the Raven should obviously be one of the picks since it's what got the idea going and becuase of the movie. Does anyone else have any favorites? I'm partial to the Tell-Tale Heart and The Pit and the Pindulum but I want to look at my Poe collection before I settle on one to pick. If that's what we're going to do... each of us pick a favorite?

If that's how we're doing it. I pick "The Fall of the House of Usher"

One of my favorites is The Masque of the Red Death.

Stacey Jo (st1ac2ey3) I'm going with The Pit and the Pendulum. I was given this one when I was like 7 or 8 I think? I thought it was the creepiest and most fascinating think I'd ever read. It's always been one of my favorites. It was my first taste of Poe so it's always held a soft spot for me.

Stacey Jo (st1ac2ey3) So far we have:

Brooke: The Murders in the Rue Morgue
Amy J: The Fall of the House of Usher
Zuzana: The Masque of the Red Death
Stacey Jo: The Pit and the Pendulum

We could work our way down through the list over on the buddy reads thread? It's a suggestion though, so if someone wants to do it a different way, jump in here. I'm just throwing out an idea. Sorry, I'm an organizer. I've newly out of lurkdom so I don't want to step on any toes :o)

Please don't think that you are going to step on toes! That is the fun of buddy reads, anyone can get it going. I think that the group is set up so that anyone can start a thread, but if it does not work, please let me know and I will change it. This one sounds like fun, I read The Masque of the Red Death when I was in Jr. High, it was one of the creepier books that I had read at that time.

Cool. Like I said in my intro, I'm a mod in two other groups so I've got goodreads down pretty good. I'm getting started on the murders on the rue morgue today :0)

So far I love the selection.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue: a detective story (considered to be the first)
The Fall of the House of Usher: a gothic horror
The Masque of the Red Death: a chilling allegory
The Pit and the Pendulum: a study of the effects of terror

Are there going to me more rounds? I cannot imagine skipping The Black Cat, Tell-Tale Heart, and The Gold Bug.
