Despairing of your chances of heaven is probably the best place to start cause you might actually ask for help and like the prodigal son you will find that the Father is just waiting for you to start back to him. As Jesus told that story of the son that didn't deserve anything, we hear him say that while the son was a "long way off" (and I think that sounds a lot like "no where near the man he ought to be") the Father ran to him and kissed him and did all those other wonderful things to show how happy he was that his son that was dead had returned from the dead.
