The birds can be guides to chart the plot ---story map for the story.
Use the birds to write character sketches over the characters in the book.
Give the students a choice of a bird and have them write how the description of the bird is symbolic of a character or their relationship with a other character.
There are great truisms in this book----have the students choose one and write an essay over it and how it applies to the character and theme of the book.
Which bird represents the climax and which bird sums up the overall theme of the book and have students write an essay explaining.
