From reading Paul's post about a book called Last Day of Creation, I discovered the existance of this old but apparantly very loved RPG PC game called Original War which is based loosely on that book.
I found this youtube video which gives an affectionate description of the game and its story without giving away spoilers (but there appears to be some nice twists). He gives an affection playthrough of the beginning of this game.
