Shushu Shuwaana i hate her sooo much

She's one of those villains that I love to hate. She believes in her cause so absolutely and is so determined... and yet, so irritatingly condescending and power-hungry.

Plus, I love the dichotomy of Mary and the McGill -- the lovely, sweet girl who's really evil... contrasted against the hideous monster who actually turns out to be good.

Harold Smithson Mary Hightower is possibly the scariest character ever conceived. With Mayor Prentiss and Anton Chigurh, you can at least take some respite in the fact that you're not like them, but with Mary Hightower, there's no breathing room. She is portrayed as brave, willing to make sacrifices, and above all loving. Her love is motherlike, something that we all share, which makes her so much like us. We can all identify with Mary and we might even become her. On top of that, she's so convinced that she's right that there's simply no way to argue with her. Utterly terrifying.

Caroline I loved to hate Mary but I also empathized with her. She thought her way was right and did not want to hear of moving on because she couldn't herself and she was jealous of those that could or wanted to. Plus the relationship between Mary and Nick was infactuating to me

Alyssa I thought she was nice at first, but then she started making me really mad because her view about keeping people in Everlost seemed pretty twisted. The fact that she was super motherly was just like, evil, but it doesn't seem evil, which makes it more evil xd

Haley Baker She got on my nerves so much uh i hated her

That's a good point, I never thought about it like that.

Jessica If you haven't already, move on to Everwild. It will definitely affirm your hate for Mary. She moves from this controversial motherly hen who strongly believes in her opinions to this twisted, power-hungry monster that is willing to destroy everything for the sake of having her own way.

Lauren She is a well-crafted antagonist. She convinces her followers that they have no other option, which keeps them in the palm of her hand. She also has complex motivations and has strong convictions of her views.

Mariama Lei Mary is an amazing antagonist that u just love to hate because she brainwashed herself into believing all of that ridiculous stuff about killing everyone so that they could all be in Everlost and no one ever leaving because it just wasn't right. She is a perfectly crafted villian that has her vulnerable side as well and i love that. you have those moments where you think she might change because she still kinda had feelings for Nick. That was at the beginning of the series. By the end, it's apparent that Mary's soul has just been to consumed and polluted by her own brainwashing that it is beyond repair. Her brother changed, but Mary simply is the perfect antagonist for this book and i dislike her highly, but that's the point right??

Mary Its so funny how I was so happy to read this because one of the characters had my name-which has been rare in YA-and yet she turns out to be someone i both empathize and hate

Melanie I really dislike Mary and I hate her to the max in Everwild

Gaby Testa I hate mary!! And you would hate her even more if you read the second book she gets meaner and meaner every second!!!

Alyssa I just finished Everwild and oooh my gosh, Mary is sooo freaking messed up. But the thing is, she does it nicely and makes kids love her and she thinks it's right! I can almost see where she's coming from, but then I'm like "Wait, what? No! That's horrible!!" It's so twisted, but so cool xD

Completely agree

Clodawgi You dont know the satisfaction i felt when Allie punched Mary. I felt the same way Allie did. I was sittign there reading smiling to myself about it. I hate Milos as well, for some reason i always have.

Averi Yes and no. I love how she would do anything to prove her point. And I hate how she is in every way but that!

Sofia I just hate Mary

Storm Arashi Mary I used to like, but... Goodness I couldn't stand her after Everwild. The fact that after all Nick did for her, even bringing her back from the dead was just... Ugh. =A= I was SO glad she got what she was deserved.

Frederico Allie is just as much a bigot as mary. The story made her out like a heroine with a good ending, but the truth is that the lives taken by the skinjackers are also on her hands.Who is she to insist that her perceived "way of life" after death is any more correct than mary's?Because of her arrogance of her own opinion which drove her to shatter mary's dream, the latter lost her mind and resorted to outright murder.True that mary's true inner self isnt that noble as she tried to make herself out to be,but also true is that she wouldnt have murdered any living person if allie hadnt interfered.and its not like she mistreated the afterlights she took under her wing;they were passive but at least they were happy. Is it so important to pass into the light,or to do different things everyday,if it ultimately makes no difference?

Eric Kind of, I think people hate her because in the book, it makes her seem like a wretched dictator, and it's from another viewpoint.
