This is the thread fro all your May Monthly Read nominations.

I look forward to your nominations and wish you all good reading.

Declan :)

Sarah Yoffa (webbiegrrlwriter) | 67 comments I'd like to nominate another SciFi book (haha, I won't give up!)

Conditioned Response (Phoenician, #2) by Marjorie F. Baldwin is a new release by a new Indie Author, Marjorie F. Baldwin. The book is #2 on the Best Indie Books to Read in 2012 (or was last time I looked at the book + lists it's on). The book is also #1 Hottest SciFi Horror and Erotic Romance and #22 Best Science Fiction by a Female Author.

I've read the book and it's quite good, definitely a #1 Hottest SciFi and a great "beach read" (book you want to read for hours, lounging in the sun and not even notice the time going by). However, I don't think it deserves the #22 Science Fiction by Female Author ranking simply because it's ranked higher than Lois McMaster Bujold. I'm biased. I just can't imagine anyone better than The Bujold, Herself ;-) If Lois weren't on the list, then okay, I'd believe this book is up there with Hunger Games and Wrinkle in Time.

One word of caution: this book is very erotic, so that's a warning for people who don't like to read about sex, but the sex is completely relevant to the plot and the characters. It's kind of a psychological thriller / mystery where people aren't even in control of their own thoughts and have inappropriate thoughts about others--and realize they're doing it but can't stop themselves. Very kewel mind game. I like the way the Adjustment is visualized in Ch 2. Here's the book's short blurb from Smashwords:

A fast-paced, science fiction thriller that reads more like a mystery. Set in the far-future on an alien world, humanity's last remnants are trying to save the species from extinction. Huxley-ian eugenics and a Heinlein-ian stance on "citizenship and service" are blended together artfully by 1st-time Author Marjorie F. Baldwin. Add in an Asimov-ian machine turned man story just for good measure.

It's a classic dystopian science fiction story, a lot like Huxley's BNW but totally up-dated on the genetic engineering and artificial intelligence stuff for the 21st century. In fact, it feels a little like it's set in the 21st century not the far future but the date's never stated so who knows?

The people in this book are AMAZING. That's the secret of this book's popularity. Great characters and the story totally hinges on them, not on some event. The people, themselves, are the "conflict" in this book. It's not literary but the plot almost sounds like a classic literature character study--just with SciFi's epic sized cast.

The book is only available as an eBook (no paper) but is selling on Smashwords and on the Amazon Kindle UK store (£5.84 including VAT but Smashwords adds VAT on top of the sales price). Since I'm in the US, I dunno which one is a better price in the end, sorry.

Also, sorry this is so long-winded but you know me, Declan. Talk talk talk! LOL. I was sooooo tempted to try to nominate Ethan of Athos (Vorkosigan Saga, #6) by Lois McMaster Bujold again but there's always next month! :) I'll get this group reading SciFi if it kills me.

I-like-to-read (akakate) I'd like to nominate Middlesex, just read this and there are lots of things to talk about, so I think it would make a really good read for a book group.

Pure by Andrew Miller sounds interesting, but showing availability here on May 29, 2012. Is it already out where you are?

Susan | 4707 comments Middlesex, 11/22/63 and Pure may all be good books but I'd like to nominate a book connected to Ireland, Lion of Ireland. As far as the science fiction, I thought we did not nominate books only in E book format.Lion of Ireland

message 9: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 1205 comments Lion of Ireland would also fit into the Quarterly read.Declan said that if a book came in only one form that should be noted so voters could take that into account when voting.

Oh, it must be between editions or something. It was available in easons and the book depository a few weeks ago. Haven't checked since.

I wonder if we're talking about the same "Pure" as there are several by different authors. This

Pure (Pure, #1) by Julianna Baggott is available, this Pure by Andrew Miller is not.

I'm closing this thread and compiling the poll. I've checked Online stores in Ireland for sales of 'Pure' and both are available in both paper and electronic formats.

I'll compile the list with the Andrew Miller nomination as it was the first listed by Iuliana.

I like this list. It's good to see such diversity in the list. Btw, Sarah. You're still the only member to nominate sci-fi since the groups inception.

In future I may ban Irish novels from this read, but any ambiguity lies in the nominator's favour, so Lion of Ireland is in.

Thank you all for your nominations.

Declan. :)
