Ken Fredette (klfredette) Hi, my name is Kenneth, and I am also in Scandinavian and Nordic Crime Fiction and in World Mysteries and Thrillers. My hobby is reading books so when I found another source for books I took it. Anything Scandinavian or Nordic is a hit with me. Answer me this are Yrsa, Steinunn, and Frida related?

Lili | 3 comments Hi I'm Lili and I also love Scandinavian and Nordic crime fiction as well as anything else that seems good. Just love reading.

Larissa | 8 comments Hello-

I'm Larissa, and I'm actually moving from Brooklyn to Reykjavik this month to study Icelandic at the University of Iceland. I'd like to translate contemporary Icelandic fiction one day.

Glad to find this group!

Carolyn | 4 comments All the very best, Larissa, and I would love it if you could become a translator. There's so much good stuff I would love to read. Bestu kveðjur!

Shifty (shiftynj) | 1 comments Hi I am Chris and my dad and I love Iceland and what little we know of Icelandic culture, eager to learn more. We just got back from the íslendingadagurinn (Icelandic Festival of Manitoba)

I am also trying to complete my NaNoWriMo novel which -- somehow -- I found myself writing from the perspective of a young gay man on Heimaey. I am particularly interested in finding books that discuss life for, and attitudes towards LGBT people in rural parts of Iceland and Manitoba.

Soralund | 1 comments Hi, I'm new to the site. I read Michael Ridpath's "Fire and ice" triology and got really intrigued about Iceland, the country, the culture and the language. I've been reading about all things Icelandic ever since. I am trying to learn Icelandic too but am finding it really difficult !

Hello, I'm Marta. I live in Iceland. I don't read a lot of Icelandic literature, but I read a lot of Icelandic children's books when I was younger. I mostly read fantasy now. I joined this group because I wanted to see what the best Icelandic books are, since I don't really know a lot about them.

message 9: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 4 comments Hi Marta
I live in Australia and really love Icelandic books. Here are some:
Crime/thriller:
1. Anything by Arnaldur, read in order for best results
2. Anything by Yrsa Sigurdardottir
3. Season of the Witch, by Arni Thorarinsson
4. Flatey Enigma and House of Evidence, by Viktor Arnar Ingolfsson

I also love Halldor Laxness. You may like to start with The Fish Can Sing, or The Atom Station. I also loved Iceland's Bell.

Among others I have enjoyed are Reply to a letter for Helga, by Bergsveinn Birgisson and Angels of the Universe by Einar Mar Gudmundsson. Stefan Mani has also written some thrillers. Hope this helps!

Lisle Soukup | 1 comments Hi I'm going to Iceland this summer and looking for some good local books. I've ordered The Blue Fox after hearing a story about it on NPR, but would love some other recommendations for fiction

message 11: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 8 comments Besides the crime novels and novels that Carolyn mentioned above, I would highly recommend The Pets or The Ambassador by Bragi Olafsson and The Greenhouse by Auður Ava Olafssdóttir.

message 12: by Steinn (new)

Steinn | 2 comments Hi Im Steinn, from Iceland. I prefer Sherlock Holmes to icelandic contemporary crime novels

Steinn | 2 comments Kenneth!
I dont think so. Sigurður is a common name in Iceland. Sigurðardóttir, means that a woman is Sigurður´s daughter. But, then again all icelanders are related 5 -10 generations back.

message 14: by Cory (new)

Cory | 1 comments Hello, I have been learning Icelandic over the past two years, have traveled to Iceland twice (plan to go back next summer, virus permitting!), and I enjoy reading Icelandic novels, at first just to help improve my language skills, but now because of some great Icelandic authors I have found! Just joined Goodreads. Looking forward to it.

The Greenhouse is one of my favourite books!
