I read it. I really enjoyed the first third. The middle transition was slow and I took issue with the ending for a number of reasons. But I was pretty much obsessed with it while I was reading it, and I am so flabbergasted by the Pulitzer snub, so I guess I continue to be a lil obsessed with it. Have you read the author's book of short stories? I need to get on that.
I think I might be coming into the part that you took issue with. UGH. I am still loving it, but curious to see where they go with this particular plot line. Nope, never read anything else by her, but I heard that short story book was good.
I grabbed a copy at the hotel "paperback library" when we were in Mexico and it got me right away. Had to leave it there, but plan on checking it out again soon.
I loved only the beginning. Starting in the middle the book goes all wrong. I am rereading Beloved right now and I'm telling you if Beloved is the caliber of a Pulitzer novel then Swamplandia doesn't even deserve to be considered. The quality of writing just isn't there. I read many novels last year that were more worthy of a Pulitzer. I even liked her short story collection much more than the novel. Sorry to butt in but I've been dying to tell someone!!! You all seemed like a good sounding board. Thanks for listening.
