Hi Dylan, thanks for the invite sounds like a great group!I love horror/thrillers! They make fun of me at the library cause most of the book I take out have blood, death, kill etc in the title. I never noticed until they pointed it out. Hmmm, what does that say about me? LOL
I'll try anything other than mushy romance. Hey, if there is no body part hiding somewhere I tend not to read it!
Looking forward to getting to know everyone.
Hey all! Thanks Dylan for inviting me. It sounds like a great group and I look forward to be apart of it. I'm Margaret and I am a big Horror, Mystery and thriller fan. This group is right up my alley!!!! Can't wait. so for now, Unhappy Dreams!
Hi, I'm Marilyn. I love thrillers, mysteries, horror. My favorite authors are Stephen King (yeah surprise),
Meg Gardiner, Laura Lippman, Harlan Coben, Elizabeth George. I could go on for pages. I do love serial killers too.
Welcome, MARILYN and Rebecca, I'm glad you joined. Thanks! Also Margaret, I read the first two chapters of your story, and I loved them. Great job. You'll be happy to know that I no longer have writers block. Something just clicked, and I'm finally set up for the climax and conclusion.
Hi everyone--I'm Jess. My favorite author is definitely Stephen King, without a doubt. I've absolutely loved just about everything I've read of his, with the exception of The Tommyknockers...I'm not too into aliens and stuff like that. Anyway, I'm pretty interested to find some other stuff to read along the lines of King, so I'll be looking forward to being a member of this group :)
I am Terri. Not too thrilled with Tommyknockers myself. I like most genres. Thriller, Horror, True Crime, Mysteries, prarnormals, anything Vampire...
Thanks Dylan. I had hoped you would like them. More murder and mayhem to come. I'm glad the writers block is gone. It's hard to get through some times, but when you do, it's like a avalanche of ideas come out and you don't know what to write down first. Keep it up. I look forward to reading it. Keep me posted.
I know what you mean. I was only stuck at one part and the build-up just slapped me in the face. :D
Hello Im Mole,I love murder and mayhem!mystery and the macabre Ill read anything Im not a snooty snob!lolAlthough Ive seemed to turn into Dr Seuss today!
As you can see I'm Jen, and I will be the unpopular one as I am not too happy with Stephen King. At least not since after Dolores Claiborne. I can explain more in depth if you like, but please note that I own almost all of his works prior to 1993 and have continued to read many of his short stories. The top of my list would include Ed Lee, Richard Laymon, and Joe Lansdale. I also like Bentley Little but feel his "The" books have went on for a while and I would like to see him branch out further. I will give any author a shot and think the horror/suspense genre is very vast.
Jenn, I know EXACTLY what you mean in regards to Stephen King... I tried a few of his newer ones and end up having to force myself to finish them.Oh, and Hi... I'm me... and I focus on horror with an occasional thriller now and again...
Big fan of Keene, Kenyon, Everson, Lovecraft, Masterton, and Matheson.
Hi, I'm Matt and I am really looking forward to reading some great horror books. I just joined this site a few days ago and I already have several great recommendations. Dean Koontz is one of my favorites but I am sure I will have some new favorites soon. Since there is a Stephen King thread here, I must admit I have only read one book, "Cell". The next SK book for me will be "The Stand". I don't think I can go wrong with that choice based on feedback.
I think I am the only person on the planet who did not like The Stand! I just could not get into it and I tried numerous times cause everyone says how great it is. I think lately King is hit or miss. I did enjoy Duma Key but that was the first in a long time that I liked.Welcome to eveyone and I look forward to getting to know you guys. (if I dont get kicked out for not liking The Stand LOL)
Stephen King is a hit or miss writer for sure. But then most are. I don't care for many of his books at all. They seem to easy or commercial for my taste.Same with Anne Rice. Everyone raved about her vampire books and while they were good, I sure didn't see the draw. I suppose the films with Pitt and Cruise helped that a lot!
I like my stories more realistic, in your face and original. In past years I have found that many of the horror writers I like now are published by Leisure Horror/Dorchester. They have gathered up a nice group of quality writers and I seem to enjoy most of what comes out of there.
Back to the Stand for a sec. It really can be a difficult book to get into. For some the very size is daunting, but the story builds slowly and many people get bored with it too. It is one of my favorites, but I can see why it wouldn't appeal to many as well.
Kind of like his story Dreamcatcher. I liked the book a lot. It was horror and science fiction all mixed up. The film nearly ruined it for me (which happens a lot) as I don't think they did a good job at all of following or portraying the book.
That is similar to my reaction to Dean Koontz fims. For instance, I really like his novel, The Watcher, and the film was nauseating to say the least!
I could go on and on and ... but I won't. -grin-
I liked the Stand, but hated Dreamcatcher... I just ordered "Black House" and "The Talisman" from bookmooch...
I agree with you on Rice, I enjoyed her first novel... but couldn't get into anything else... I may give her a try again some day.
I've tried to read Rice again but just can't get into her stories. And there are so many others to read than to waste time on something I don't really care for.Not to say she's a bad writer or anything, she's just not my cup of tea.
Hi there. New member here and seeking out some interesting groups. This is a genre I read a lot of and I write in this genre too, so thought I'd join the group.:)
Hi, I'm Amber and I love thrillers, horror, and suspenseful books and movies. The scarier, the better! Most people think I'm nuts for always searching out and enjoying the macabre. My favorite authors are King, Koontz, Thomas Harris, and most of all Chuck Palahniuk.
Hi everyone. I'm Paul. I used to write back in the 70s and 80s, but gave it up in a fit of pique when three different publishers rejected the same book with three completely diferent sets of proposed changes, all of which made the book worse, imo. I took to writing fiction in COBOL, Pascal, Perl etc. I'm glad to say I'm back writing now, for the last couple of years, mainly short stories and film scripts. I really only like thrillers, sci-fi and horror. They are just about the only things I read, and they are definitely the only genres I write in. For horror, I would opt for (in no particular order) King (early and mid career), Lovecraft, Koontz sometimes, M R James, James Herbert, Shaun Hutson (if you like post-modernism). Also Red Ball by Jihn Gideon, and the weird worl of Clive Barker. Thriller writers - Lee Childs, John D McDonald, Thomas Harris, Robert Harris, Martin Cruz Smith, Frederick Forsythe, John Connolly - Every Dead Thing is particularly nasty - and Donald James - Monstrum is magnificent.
I look forward to finding some new authors to read. Who is Chuck Palahniuk?
"but gave it up in a fit of pique when three different publishers rejected the same book"Only three? :)
"Who is Chuck Palahniuk?"
Fight Club, among others. Great writer.

Only three. If they'd just rejected it without comment (no, but send us your next work) I'd possibly have carried on. It was the three A4 pages of single spaced suggestions for improvement, all of them different, that really annoyed me. Ah well, I only wasted quarter of a century working in IT and education. And I am back to writing now, so no real harm done. ;-)Thanks for that about Chuck. I'll try and get hold of some of his books. Loved the film.
Hey all! Just what I need... more places to post and find new books to add to my ever-growing list! LOL! I'm a fanatic of all kinds of books, but I lean heavily towards horror (especially erotic horror), erotica, and paranormal books of all kinds (romance, mystery, urban fantasy, teen, etc...). My favorite authors are currently John Everson, Jeff Strand, Tim Waggoner, Sasha White, Lacey Alexander, Ray Garton, Christopher Moore, Charlaine Harris, etc... etc... etc... Way too many to name in actuality. :)I'm really looking forward to all of the discussions here! Thanks for creating this group Dylan (as well as the Leisure books one!)
You're welcome Sandanz, I'm glad you joined! Hope we could read some of Everson's work in Horror Leisure too.
Okay Sanddanz - Which was your favorite Christopher Moore book and have you read "Good Omens" by Pratchett and Gaiman?
Well, I've yet to read Fluke or Coyote Blue, but I have to go with Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove. Though I really liked the 2 vamp books and also A Dirty Job. (No, Lamb was not one of my favorites even though I know it is most people's... LOL!) What about you?I haven't read Good Omens yet, but need to do so. I do love Terry Pratchett and have read many of the Discworld books, which is yet another series I need to get back to at some point.
Good Omens is by far one of the greatest books I've ever read... it literally made me snort coke out through my nose I was laughing so hard.So far my favorite of Moore's books is Dirty Jobs, though I wasn't a fan of the ending... the neighbors really cracked me up. I also really dug the vampire books as well, though I preferred the first to the second. I still have a few more to read... we own them all, but I'm spacing out reading them so that I don't run out :)
I'm also down to only 5 more Discworld books that I haven't read... The Guards being my favorite series overall, but I have a special place in my heart for the Luggage, Greebo, and CMOT Dibbler.
Good Omens is one of my faves too - I just reread it recently and it still stands up. Love the Discworld too - Thief of Time is definitely my favourite in the series, closely followed by Mort.
I'll have to try to locate my copy of GOOD OMENS amongst the masses of books here and try to fit it in to the reading schedule soon. I've been hearing everyone tell me how great it is for years, but have yet to read it! I must look for it!It's been several years since I read the Discworld books, but I remember really liking the DEATH books as well as the Rincewind ones. Plus I loved the exploding baby dragons... hee hee!
I have several of the Discworld books on CD to listen to with the kids on long car rides... They LOVE Twoflower and the Luggage. It's so funny to see how different the humor is to a 7 and 10 year old. I like that I can enjoy the books on CD and not have to worry that there's anything inappropriate for the kids.
How is the reader for the audiobooks? I have a hard time with a lot of the people that do the readings of audiobooks. And did you see my question re: Drop Dead Gorgeous above?
The ones we have are read by Nigel Planer - I got them off of audible before a 10 hour car ride with the kids... and he does a great job other than all of the women sound like Trannys. As they get farther into the series he seems to get better at them... the Color of Magic had some really rough transitions between the story and the footnotes.
I'll have to check them out sometime as it's been so long since I read the first ones in the series I don't remember a lot about what happened. And I think I edited my last comment right after you saw it. LOL!
I'm only about 20 pages into Drop Dead Gorgeous and I left it at work (BOOOO!) so I'll let you know once I get far enough to form an opinion... looks interesting so far. I really dig the cover... but we all know that they can be decieving.
Yeah... I really liked the cover and then read like the first page at the store. I didn't buy it that first day, but then I went back to a Borders a couple weeks later and bought it. LOL!
I was sent a copy to review... but lucky me, all 6 of the books I'm supposed to review showed up on the same day, so now I've got a guilt complex and have to read them asap... the problem is that one of them is HUGE... I think I'll save that one for last.
monsterlibrarian.com and herodessey.com, I also keep a blog that I review everything I read on just for the heck of it... I'm not sure why because I can't imagine anyone reads it.I don't get any money from it... but I do get free books
I actually started following your blog earlier today... or I assume that's the one you're referring to anyway. :)
Thats because I can't spell after 8pmhttp://herodyssey.blogspot.com/
She hasn't posted my last several reviews yet. And then my blog is www.ravenskya.blogspot.com
Not sure if this is really the right thread, but if anyone is interested, my first novel, RealmShift, has been released as an ebook through smashwords.com - it's a dark fantasy/horror/thriller, so I thought it relavant.https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...
:)
Hi!My name's Jon and I'm new to the group.
I'm a thriller writer who is currently shopping around a novel...and getting the typical results. sigh.
My favorite books include "The End of the Affair, "On the Road," and "Les Miserables."
In terms of thrillers, I guess I'm old school: Poe, Stoker, Greene, Fleming, and so on.
