I like 'light' multi historical period novels like Sarum: The Novel of England, North and South and Kane and Abel, currently reading Fall of Giants that is heading the same way.

tho I cried a lot throughout
the historical period is one I knew little about, other than Gone with the Wind, but more focused on the native genocide
started songspinners, a fantasy on universal themes
Although I continue with Recognitions, I paused and did a quick read of James Thompson's Helsinki White
, which I loved despite its brutality. So very well-written. And I'm deeply invested in this series and the characters.

Started Songdogs byColum McCann. Especially for a first novel, its wonderful.

Reading Gravity's Rainbow and Helen in Egypt. H.I.E is an interesting idea; what if Stesichorus and Herodotus were right? What if Helen and Paris stopped in Egypt and only Paris continued on to Troy? What if the Achaeans spent 10 years besieging the city for a phantom?
