This is a little itty thing I was writing for myself. Just read it, tell me what you think of it, and I might continue it. Sound good?

I walk briskly down the road to school with my books clutched to my way-too-flat chest. A couple of girls wave at me. One even calls out, “Hi!” I smile back and keep walking, trying to speed up without looking like I’m speeding up.
I sail into the school grounds. One of my books drops to the ground. I flush and bend over to pick it up just as a bell rings. Lovely. Late on the first day of sophomore year.
I run to my class, relieved to find that Mr. Helmond hasn’t admitted the class in yet. I smile waveringly at the kids that I kind-of-sort-of know in line. Only one smiles back, a boy that I’ve never talked to. I join the end of the line as Helmond opens the door.
He’s the kind of teacher that kids have nightmares about. Crisp. Fresh. Pressed. Everything about Mr. Helmond is precise. His hair is combed back. He’s wearing a suit. Yep. Nightmare material. The teacher that will demand homework on time and will offer no extra credit.
I realize that the line’s gone forward. With a little jump, I walk up to the door. Helmond glances at me, my inky hair that I didn’t comb, my ratty old sneakers, my probably very zoned-out eyes. His gaze lingers on me for a little longer that it should. Of course it does. He’s probably gotten a profile on me as a possible troubled student. He’s calculating exactly how troubled I am.
I continue past him. Everyone’s clustered in the back. No one I really know is in this class. Perfect. I sigh, roll my eyes, and read the whiteboard. PLEASE PICK A SEAT OF YOUR CHOICE.
I select a seat and dump my backpack under the desk.
Helmond walks up to the front of the classroom.
“My name is James Helmond,” he says. “I’m your new English teacher, for advanced sophomore English.”
Everyone in the class seems to sigh as they realize that yes, school really has started, and now we must work.
And get back into it.
