Chapter 1

Scarlett

“You promised me, Kyle” I begin before my voice broke; I instantly look away from him. I couldn’t look at him without breaking down. How could he do this to me? Sniffling, I glance towards the floor. “You promised you wouldn’t leave me” I continue, feeling tears rolling down my eyes; I quickly wiped them with sleeve of my jacket.

“Scarlett…” He begins. I feel his hand on my shoulder, followed by his arms wrapping around me. I want to push him away but instead I found myself leaning into him. He rocks me back and forth, his hand reaching towards my hair, stroking it. “I’m not doing this to hurt you, Scar” He told me in soothing voice. “I’m doing this, because it something I need to do”

Sniffling, I turned around and faced him. “I don’t want you to go…” I confessed. I knew that I was being selfish but I knew if I let him go, I’ll never see him again.

“I’ll come back for you, I promise” He responded, his hand brushing strands of my hair, away from my eyes. “So, it’s not like you’ll never see me again”

“You can’t make a promise like that” I broke away from his hold, taking a step back. “It’s not like you’re moving. You’re going into army” my voice coming out harsher then I intended it to be.

Kyle sighed. “Scarlett, I don’t want to do this right now. I don’t want to fight”

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t let me know you were enlisting?” Tears formed in my eyes, so I glanced away from him. I have get out of here. Before I could change my mind, I ran past him and towards the door. I ignored his calls. I could hear his footsteps behind me. Keep running.

“Scarlett, stop!” I heard his voice before I felt his hand wrapping around my waist.

“Let go!” I screamed at him, trying to break free from his grip, only to feel his hands wrap tighter around me. I spun around, facing him. “Shouldn’t be leaving?” I snapped at him, even thought all I want to do is wrap my arms around him and never let go. I want to tell him to stay, to not leave me. “Just go, Kyle. I don’t want you here” I find myself saying instead.

“You don’t mean that, Scarlett” I heard his voice, filled with hurt.

“Actually…” I began but paused when I saw his expression. Is this how you want to say goodbye? By upsetting him? Imagine how hard this must be on him. My eyes met his. “No, I don’t” I confessed, wrapping my arms around his waist. “I don’t want you to go. Can’t you stay, please?” I asked him, feeling tears forming in my eyes but this time I didn’t even bother wiping them away.

I saw Kyle reaching towards me, wiping the tears that made it down my cheeks. “Don’t cry” He whispered before leaning his forehead against mine. “You know I don’t want to leave you. We’ll keep in touch, we can write letters”

I sniffled. “It won’t be the same” I wrapped my arms around him and placed my head on his chest, feeling his heart racing. “When are you leaving?” I asked him after a moment.

“Beginning of next week” He stated after a moment of silence.

“I’m going to miss you”

“Scarlett, don’t” He responded, his voice breaking. Kyle’s hand reached towards me, brushing the strands of my hair away from my eyes. “Don’t say goodbye, we still got another week”

“It won’t make it any easier, we’ll have say goodbye eventually” I responded, my voice breaking. “What am I going do without you, Kyle?” I asked him, before breaking down, my knees going weak.

Kyle
I grabbed her, seeing she was about to fall, holding her. I wanted to tell her that it’ll be okay but I knew that it wouldn’t make her feel any better. Instead I rocked her back and forth. I saw people passing us by since we were standing on sidewalk, some watching us, some whispering as they passed us by. I ignored them; all that mattered right now was Scarlett.

“Baby” I whispered to her, leaning closer to her. “You’re going be okay, you got your sister. Before you know, I’ll be back” I whispered, when I wanted say:I don’t know what I will do without you either. I wanted to tell her that I would stay, for her. I knew it’s what I should say but it’s was too late for that, I couldn’t back out now.

Pulling back, she looked at me, her eyes red and puffy from crying. Leaning over, I kiss her cheek before wiping her tears away with my thumb. “We’ll make it through this Scar, together”

She sniffled. “What if you don’t come back?”

I placed my hands on both sides of her face. “I’ll come back”

“You can’t know that for sure, Kyle” She stated in low voice, sniffling. “What if something happens to you? What if there is an accident? Or….” She paused, unable to finish the sentence.

I shook my head, my own tears forming in my eyes. I refused to let them fall; I had to be strong for her. “Don’t say it Scarlett” I whispered to her. “Don’t think about something that might not happen”

“It‘s the army, Kyle. There is more chance that it happen then it won’t” She paused, and I knew that she was thinking about her father, who was a Sergeant in army and was killed when she was 12. I knew she was afraid, and I wanted to tell her I was afraid too, afraid of dying, of never seeing her again. Get a hold of yourself, she needs you.

Taking her hand, I placed on my chest. “If anything happens…” I paused, knowing that it wasn’t what she wanted to hear but I knew she was right. “I’ll always be right her, I’ll always love you” I responded, my own voice breaking.

“Kyle…” She leaned her head against my chest. “I lost my father already, I can’t lose you too”

Placing my chin on her shoulder, I could feel my own tears falling. “I promise you, I will do anything I can, to come back to you” I wiped the tears with back of my hand. I wrapped my arms tighter around her, watching her. “I love you, Scarlett” I whispered.

Her eyes met mine. “I love you too. Promise you won’t forget me”

“I can never forget you” I responded. “You’re the first and only girl I loved”

Scarlett smiled, the smiled I want to see. “You always find a way to make me smile, that’s what I love about you”

“That’s my job. You know I hate to see you cry” I responded.

Sniffling, she smiled again before standing on her tiptoes, her lips touching mine before pulling away, her forehead resting against mine. “I’m going to miss this. I’m going to miss your kisses, your touches. It’s going be lonely without you”

“I’ll miss it too. Don’t think about it now. Think happy thoughts”

Her hand went through my hair, as she watched me, her expression filled with affection. “Do you remember?” She began. “When we first met?”

I smiled. “How can I forget? It was the best day of my life”

I saw her from distance, dancing as I took a sip of my water. She was wearing a purple and white patterned dress and heels, her hair swinging in the air while she danced with the bride and some of the other bridesmaids. I remember seeing her during the wedding; she was the maid of honor, I wanted to say something to her, wanted to tell her how pretty she looked, but didn’t want interrupt the wedding.

Placing my water on nearby table, I approached one of groomsmen. “James” I said, placing a hand on his shoulder.

He spun around, facing me. “Hey Kyle, you having fun?” He asked me, taking a sip of his beer, even though I knew he still wasn’t of age, but that never stopped him before.

“Yes” I responded. “Do you know name of maid of honor by the way?” I asked him, anxiously. I don’t remember the last time I felt so nervous around a girl.

James glanced towards her, before glancing towards me and smiling. “Well, well. Someone has a crush” He teased me, causing my face to heat up. “That’s Scarlett, she’s Andrea’s sister” He responded. “Go ask her for dance”

“She’s already dancing”

James rolled his eyes. “Then go make a conversation. Don’t be shy, she won’t bite”

Taking a deep breath, I approached the dance floor, my heard pounding the whole way. What’s wrong with you, it’s not like you haven’t talked to girl before. Music stopped just as I walked up towards her and she walked away from the dance floor. “Hey, anyone is sitting here?” I asked her, pointing next to empty chair next to hers.

Looking up, she smiled. “No, go ahead”

I sat down besides her, and for moment I couldn’t speak, I just watched her when she looked towards the dance floor. “You look like you having fun”

Picking a glass of Ice Tea from table, she faced me, and moment her eyes met mine; we couldn’t seem to look away from each other. “Yes, it’s a blast” She responded, breaking the silence. “I’m Scarlett” She responded, placing the glass back on table and sticking her hand towards mine.

“Scarlett” I repeated, smiling at her. “Beautiful name for beautiful girl” I told her before taking her hand. “I’m Kyle”

She blushed. “It’s nice to meet you. How do you know Bride & Groom?”

“One of groomsmen, James, he’s my best friend. Mason is his brother and we grew up together so know him pretty well. Andrea is your sister, right?”

Scarlett nodded. “How did you know?”

“James mentioned it” I responded shyly. “You know, you a good dancer”

Her face flushed. “Thanks, I always loved dancing” Picking up the glass from the table, she took a sip out of her ice tea. “Are you having fun?”

I smiled. “I am” I responded. Just at that moment Lady in Red came on, I glanced towards Scarlett who was watching other couples dancing. “Scarlett?”

She turned towards me. “Yes?”

“Would you like to dance?” I asked her, my voice shaking from nerves as I extended my hand toward hers.

She glanced at my hand for second before taking it. “I’d love to. I love this song” She responded with smile, as I led her towards the dance floor. I wrapped my arms around her waist while she wrapped hers around my neck.

“You’re so beautiful” I blurted after few seconds. What are you doing? You just met her! Seeing her smile, I smiled and moved closer towards her. I couldn’t remember the last time I felt such strong attraction towards anyone; there was something special about her. Just watching her, made me want to grab her and kiss her but I resisted the urge, and kept on dancing.

Scarlett
I smiled at him, remembering our first meeting. I remember him smiling at me when he saw me walking down the aisle; I remember the butterflies I felt when he asked me to dance. I have been with couple guys before meeting Kyle, but no guy made me feel, the way he does. My hand went through his hair. “Promise me you’ll be careful”

“I promise”

I smiled. “There is something else I been wanting to ask you” I told him anxiously, my heard pounding in my chest. Are you really going do this? You think this is smart idea, considering the fact that he leaves in a week? I heard a though, that I decided to ignore. I needed to do this.

“What is it, babe?” He asked me, watching me curiously.

“I know it’s last minute but…” I paused, hesitating before taking both of his hands into mine. “I been thinking about this a lot” Do it already before you change your mind. “From moment we met 3 years ago, you always been there for me. You put with everything, and I can’t see myself without you in my life” My heard pounded harder, and I felt like it was about to burst out of my chest. “Kyle Chase Miller, marry me” I blurted out.

I saw his eyes going wide. Oh god, he’s going to say no. What was I thinking? Thoughts ran through my mind, causing me to glance towards the ground. “Scarlett, I’m the one who supposed to propose”

“Is that a yes?” I asked, even thought I already knew the answer.

“Yes, Scarlett Dawson, I’ll marry you. I can’t see myself with anyone else. You brighten up my life” Before I had chance to say anything else, he lifted me in air, spinning me around.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 373 comments Wow, really nice , full of passion!! I only have one piece of feedback: the first two paragraphs you are mixing present tense with past tense, but then you write the rest of the chapter in past. It's an easy fix. You just have to chance the words Begin, look (only the first one), glance, continue, and want to began, looked, glanced, continued, and wanted. Does that make sense? An easy fix and then it will flow better :)
