here's my idea: maybe they live in a community of sirens or mermaids or something. and it's all female. and there's only one merman left, but he has to marry the princess and you could be his lover?

Nathan swam around in the water, looking for Isa. There was no sign of her. He decided to look on land. He stuck his head up and saw her.
"Isa!" he yelled

isa stopped and looked toward the waster seeing nathan and she smiled and waved at him wanting him to come to land

The water dulls down her fiery red hair, making it a dull color so that she can swim in the water without being noticed so easily.

Nathan smiled and came onto the land. He sat down beside Isa and took her hand.
"Are you okay?" he asked. He knew she only came on land when she was upset and needed to think.

isa leaned against him looking at him "its just you have to marry the princess and i get nothing"

Nathan took Isa's face in his hands.
"Isa, listen to me. You won't have nothing. I'm not going to marry the princess," he said.

isa looked him in the eyes "but nathan you have to the king will kill you if you don't"

"I don't care if I have to die to be with you, Isa. We could run away together. I don't want to be with someone I don't love," Nathan said boldly.

isa kissed him slowly "then lets run away"

Nathan pulled away and frowned.
"Isa...you know that I wish I could, but I can't just leave Mom and little Cecilia. They need me..." Nathan explained.

isa got up looking at him a tear forming in her eyes "then i will leave"

Nathan grabbed Isa's arm.
"No, Isa. Please...we'll figure something out. I'm sure that we can stall it long enough until Cecilia's old enough to support herself and Mom, and they don't need me anymore," Nathan tried to reason with her.

isa looked at him crying "please leave with me"

"Isa!" Nathan shouted, frustrated. "What can't you understand, love? I want to go with you. I really do. But... what about my mother and Cecilia? Who's going to take care of them? Please. Isa, please. Just stay a little longer. I promise that I will make this work out. Somehow..." he whispered to her, gently stroking her hair.

she cried against him hard "i don't want to loose you i love you and i know i will loose you to the princess"

Nathan wrapped his arms around her, gently stroking her hair.
"It's going to be alright. Everything is going to be alright. Come on. Let's go back before someone finds out we've been here. You know the rules about being on land," Nathan urged her. He hugged her tighter and then wiped her tears. Then, he took her hand and squeezed it.
"Come on; the sun's about to set. You know what that means."

she sighed and stepped into the water feeling the coldness take her body and start to transform her right before him

Nathan quickly pulled her hand and swam back to Aquaticalia as quickly as possible. He knew that if they were not back before sunset, the gates to the city would lock them out, making them vulnerable to all kinds of dangers. As Nathan neared the gates, he saw that they were beginning to close.
"Isa! Quickly," he yelled, swimming faster.

she swam as fast as she could and they made it into the gates and she hugged him "i guess you have to go to your princess now" she looked away letting out a cry

Nathan looked back. Outside the gate lay the little box containing the special ring he was going to give Isa.
"No, I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying right here with you. Isa, we'll find a way. I promise" he said again.

she let out a cry hugging him "i can't lose you nathan, i have lost everyone and thing in my life and i'm not loosing you"

"Shhhhh, it's alright. It will all be alright. Look, I have to go now. It's getting dark and you know what happens if you're still out. Please, go back to your house. I'll see you tomorrow," Nathan said. He looked around, making sure it wasn't too late. He kissed her forehead and let her go.

He knew that after sunset when the gates closed, the narlies would begin attacking. The narlies. Once merpeople. Now monsters who consumed the merpeople.
