i have thought of reading crime and punishment but i would really appreciate it if i get some suggestions

Nikita's Childhood is my all time favourite Russian book.

That a tough question. There are so many I would like to suggest. I think you can start with stories. Anton Chekhov is an all time favourite. Crime and Punishment would be quite a read for the first Russian book.

Anna Karenina would be a good book to start . Crime & Punishment could be a little heavy ...

Like Parikhit, I would advise to start with short stories. I like the short stories of Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Ivan Turgenev or Ivan Bunin.

Ah! How could I forget Gogol. Thanks Dely. Also, you may look into the short stories penned by Tolstoy before venturing into his novels.

Nice post.. even I have just taken up some Russian literature.(since i returned from Russia a month back)
Started with Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.. It's supposed to be one of the must reads. Just finished a few pages.. I am liking it.

Anna karenina, have heard a lot.. but kinda heavy and slow? (Had seen the movie..didnt suit my taste as such)

Russian classics can be intriguing, thrilling, a bit dark, political, repressive and depressing but put forth great thought, philosophy and some amazing learning.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Nikolai Gogol, Vladimir Nabokov, Chekov, etc can be looked forward to. Leo Tolstoy can be quite heavy. Kindly correct me if I am wrong.

You MUST read Anna Karenina. It is amazing. May be slow but beautiful.
