"The Fall of the House of Usher" is one of my favourite Edgar Allan Poe's stories, because of the importance given to the physical space: the House, and the connection between the mind and the physical place. As readers we are slowly introduce to this space, from its outside look, to its insight: " I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it was –but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit" Gradually we are beginning to observe its exterior aspect: : “Its principal feature seemed to be that of an excessive antiquity. The discoloration of ages had been great. Minute fungi overspread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-work from the eaves.” From then on, we enter to another world, another reality: the mind of Roderick Usher.
I completely forgot about this buddy read. Perhaps, later this spring I can dig out from under my to read pile and pick these stories up. Thanks for bringing this back up!
