message 2: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 36 comments I'm really wanting to read The Thirteenth Tale, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Can't wait to get started!

message 3: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (weebbt) | 3 comments I need to read Catcher In The Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Grapes Of Wrath...those modern classics that I've somehow avoided. Will mix it up with a pure fun book in between.

message 4: by Allison (new)

Allison i think that the vanishing act of esme lennox would make for an interesting discussion.

along those same lines, but books i haven't read:
eva moves the furniture
tethered

all of these are awesome!!!!

message 6: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (audneal) All the books y'all have named are great, I think. I enjoyed every single one of them -- except for Tethered and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, because I haven't read those yet. They are on my list, but not my shelves, so it may be a bit before I end up getting to them. Got to pare the shelves down quite a bit first.

message 7: by Jocelynne (new)

Jocelynne Broderick i've also been wanting to read the thirteenth tale.

message 8: by Staci (new)

Staci Everyone has great ideas...how about at least one Jane Austen book?

Audrey (audneal) Staci wrote: "Everyone has great ideas...how about at least one Jane Austen book?"

I'm all for that, seeing as how I haven't read ANYTHING by Jane Austin (I know, I know...) but I keep meaning to do so.

great suggestions ladies.
and YES to austen.
one of my personal goals this year is to read all of her books. i've only read pride and prejudice and it seems a bit of a flake not to have read the others!

message 11: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Hopkins (kylissa) | 7 comments Hey Ladies! I am new to the book club but super excited! My all time favorite book is Alice by Sara Flanigan. I read it at least every year/6 months or so...and I would love to see what others think about it as well. I would like to suggest we read it! I can't wait to get started!

message 12: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (audneal) I'd love to see some nonfiction on the list too. Maybe do one fiction and one nonfiction book each month? Or rotate them?

message 13: by Kelly (last edited Jan 02, 2009 10:24AM) (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) Happy New Year ladies! I'm new to the group as well (well we all are actually eh?) and I'm excited because I've always just YEARNED for people to yak it up with about books.

I'm gonna read along for a while first before I throw in my two cents. Although so far...I've read a few of the classics, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby but I've never read a Jane Austen book.

Actually, I just posted on the SIS thread that I'd like to recommend the book "Those Who Save Us" by Jenna Blum. I've heard wonderful things about this book!

So now I'll follow along and see what's up. Thanks for the invitation!

message 14: by Renae (new)

Renae (renaeclark) | 58 comments I'd love to participate in sistv book club. I'm all for "Those Who Save Us" or "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (which is sitting on my night stand right now just waiting to be read!. Renae

message 15: by Leanne (new)

Leanne | 3 comments I would love to ready anything by Jane Austin! I have seen the Pride and Prejudice movie and I am hoping to read the book! :)

message 16: by Staci (new)

Staci Rhi,
Seeing how you are our lovely moderator I think you can actually set up a poll so that we could vote monthly for a book. How does that sound? I love Audrey's suggestion of 1 fiction and 1 non-fiction. I'm game!!

message 17: by Rhi (new)

Rhi | 76 comments Mod
thats funny you say that staci, because i just posted that same thing on the sis thread!
okay so i will go with a poll :)
it will open on the 8th and run till the 10th. so everyone has time to vote.

message 18: by *Lee* (last edited Jan 03, 2009 03:58AM) (new)

*Lee* A great non-fiction is ESCAPE by Carolyn Jessop - ( http://www.fishpond.com.au/Books/Biog... ) about a woman who got out of an abusive marriage who was part of the FLDS in America. I could not put that one down when I received it last Christmas.
Also, the Marlene Dietrich biograpy by her daughter Maria Riva ( http://www.amazon.com/Marlene-Dietric... ) is one of my alltime faves, can recommend it.
I may only get to periodically participate in the set book if I can get a hold of it at the local library (dang the new book buying ban...LOL!), but I am really keen to read what you all think of the books so I can wish list them or not!

message 19: by *Lee* (new)

*Lee* OH and When In Rome by Stephanie Green is another fun non-fiction read. An Aussie chick decides to pack up and move to Italy - (http://www.fishpond.com.au/Books/Trav...)

message 20: by Debra (new)

Debra | 7 comments could read anything Austen, thirteenth tale and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society are on my list to be read

message 23: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_l) Hey does anybody like Wally Lamb? I've got a book of his that came to me highly recommended. It's GINORMOUS (as are all Wally books aren't they?). The book is http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30... The Hour I First Believed. I hear it's excellent. Has anyone read it?

message 24: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (weebbt) | 3 comments I haven't read The Hour I First Believed yet, but I can't wait. I LOVE Wally Lamb. His book, "I Know This Much Is True" is one of my all time favorites. It's long but so good.

message 25: by Ashley Wren (new)

Ashley Wren | 21 comments Oh mY freaking GOODNESS.
I just started The Catcher in the Rye...only a few chapters in - and its HILARIOUS.
i mean is it supposed to be???
because the main character and I share the same exact humor.
If I'm being completely honest I don't even know what its about at all.
There is no summary on the back, and all I know is that in the movies serial killers always check it out at the library.
Which is kind of weird because I checked it out at the library too.
OK. not so cool.
anyway. this book is the best book i have EVER EVER started reading,
and i hope it doesn't disappoint.

aw

message 26: by Elke (new)

Elke Ursin | 5 comments Hi all! Just joined the group. I am currently reading Eat Pray Love which is supposed to be excellent. I've also wanted to read Special Topics in Calamity Physics, and I have An Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life on my nightstand to read next.

When does the poll go up? I'll be excited to see what the options are!

Oh, and I read the Thirteenth Tale, and it is FANTASTIC!

message 27: by Elke (new)

Elke Ursin | 5 comments Oh, I'm a dunce. Should've looked further down the page! I'm off to vote if it's not too late. :)

I've read "She's Come Undone" which I really enjoyed although I'm sitting here not remembering it for some reason? Old Timer's setting in. I have "I Know This Much is True" sitting on my shelf waiting to be read because I've heard fabulous things about it. So I'm glad to get another nudge. :)

LOL Ashley! I don't think you'll turn into a Serial Killer or anything. It's not "catching." Get it? Catcher in the Rye. Catching? ::thigh slap::

message 30: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (audneal) Are we going to vote soon on February's book? Will it run from Feb. 15th to March 15th?

Just curious...

message 31: by *Lee* (new)

*Lee* OOOH yep - can we do our vote soon! Debra lent me her copy of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society so I would love to vote to read that!

message 32: by Rhi (new)

Rhi | 76 comments Mod
yes audrey :)
the vote opens on the 8th - 10th. and then we have 5 days to get the book.

i think with the voting, i am just gonna stick to the same books as last time, just without P&P as an option!
