Caleb made his way back to school with multiple bags of supplies, clothes, and other miscellaneous items from his trip to the mall earlier today. He still had about $140 left. He whistled tunelessly through the dark forest. A short cut he had discovered that led to the school.
He sniffed. weird he wrote off in his head before the howling came. He recognized it at once and his bones chilled. He dropped both armfuls of bags. Enoch's blue eyes shown in the darkness then disappeared. Caleb buckled over and landed on his knees and hands. A shiver and a ripple of cracking and shifting echoed the forest. Then gasping. Painful gasping. Caleb panted for a moment staring straight at the ground beneath him. When he got up his expression was nothing less than dark. He tucked his things under a large fallen down tree and covered it with brush before turning in the direction of light left by his guide.
Caleb leaned her against a thick tree. He then turned to his things under the fallen oak. He pulled out more clothes, a thermal blanket, and lots of rope, tape, chain, and locks. He layered her with more clothes. Tied her legs together and her hands behind her back. He covered her once more in the large blanket then secured it to the tree. He blindfolded her and waited.
Hours had passed. Caleb slumped against the opposite tree. He closed his eyes just for minute. Before he was thrust awake again.Caleb woke to her yelling. "Who's there!? Where am I!?" she cried out frantically. She kept on repeating herself and thrashing herself around. Caleb waited and watched, not answering. He waited until she wore herself down.
"Why are you doing this to us? What did we ever do to you?" tears were running down her face.
Caleb was confused by her words. She had said 'we' as if there was another.
"You took something of mine. Give it back!" Caleb demanded in a deep voice.
"I haven't taken anything!" she yelled frantically.
Caleb walked over to her. "You listen here. I am not interested in your excuses or your lies. Give it back to me."
"You honestly think you are right. I see that but I honestly haven't a clue about what you ar talking about. What? Give you what!? I haven't taken anything! What is it that you want from us. Why did you do that to us!? We don't remember taking anything from you. You made sure of that when you had did that to us!"
She was talking in past tense. She wasn't just talking about herself.
"What are you talking about 'us'?" he asked.
For all he knew she couldn't have done it alone.
There was a pause. Her confused expression showed under the blindfold.
"Then... you couldn't be." she muttered under her breath. She tilted her head in his direction. She reevaluated her first judgements. "It is you. You from the meadow. I recognize your-- oh God. How diluted!" She stared at him in horror. It truly was her fault. "I am so sorry."
Caleb finally went over to her and unmasked her.
She took in her surroundings.
"Release me." she with no emotion.
"Why should I?"
"Because you'll get it back. It is only temporary. I was only curious."
Caleb squinted at her. "It'll come back?" he asked.
"I know you are considering leaving me here. You want to. You don't trust me. And honestly I don't trust you either. But we both know you must."
Caleb glared at her. "Who are you?"
"Sophie" she hoped giving him this minor detail will help him do what he must. She didn't need to but she knew what he was going through. It would make him at least feel as if he has his own free will.
He moved to unravel her. It wasn't until she was free that she realized she was wearing his clothes.
"Are these-- Was I--?" she couldn't finish her sentences. She felt exposed.
Caleb looked up at her and nodded. Then continued what he was doing. She was partially grateful for that. She looked at him as he began to pack up his things.
Her eyes glazed over. They changed a murky gray.
"You are a good person." she said aloud after she analyzed him. "You are a thief and do bad things because you have to to survive here. To blend in. But it is all superficial. You are tempted by temptation as all of us are as we all were but you are not down here because you couldn't resist. You are because you could. You had resisted evil and therefore being sent down here is a reward for staying true, not a punishment for releshing in the idea."
Caleb looked up at her without speaking a word.
"You have no choice anymore. It has been taken from you. But it is not because of you. It is because of Him. He does not want to lose you to evil. Since you cannot chose evil doesn't touch your soul."
Caleb stared at her in shock. "How do you know that?"
Sophronia blinked and her eyes returned to normal. "How do I know what?" she asked completely oblivious to what she had all said.
Caleb couldn't look away. "And you don't have a choice either! They took it from you. Just as they did to me. You can't escape your fate they planned for you just as I can't fight mine." He said in realization
Sophronia stared at him wide eyed.
She was speechless."Come on... I'll help you. You are fighting it but it'll just make it worse." Caleb reached out his hand.
But she had fled.
--------------------------------------------------------Caleb walked deep into the forest. He began to strip. He hid his clothes under the roots of a great tree. A shiver rolled down his back. Convulsions seized him. Cracking bones echoed the quiet place. He bent over in temporary pain. His skin rippled.
He grunted.
He had shifted successfully. She was right it had came back. He opened up his wings and flew up into the trees.
Caleb flew back to the spot he had shifted many hours ago. His talons gripped the ground. He looked down and shifted back. He had blood on the corner of his mouth. He was hungry. He went over to where he had packed his clothes. He quickly pulled on his pants but walked barefoot the m. rest of the way. He had been summoned so he gravely went to the cave. He already knew what it could possibly be about.
