These are some of the main characters that continually appeared throughout the series:

HODGE STARKWEATHER: Once one of Valentine's foot soldiers, a curse put on him by the Nephilim keeps Hodge trapped in the Lightwood's home. Having tutored Alec and Isabelle since they were children, Hodge is like a member of the family-- but Clary can't help wondering what secrets about the past, including Jace's parents, he's trying to conceal.

CHURCH: Church is a cat that resides at the Institute.

SEBASTIAN VERLAC (JOHNATHAN MORGENSTERN): Otherwise known as Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern, was the son of Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fairchild. As a baby, he was hated by Jocelyn because his father had experimented on him before birth, dosing him with demon blood. Because of this, Jonathan became a cold, bloodthirsty psychopath, even faster and stronger than Jace. During the Lightwoods' stay in Idris, Jonathan posed as Sebastian Verlac, a cousin of the Penhallows, a rich French Nephilim family; he shows no remorse whatsoever for his actions. Sebastian was adept at charm and charisma but was in reality vindictive, arrogant, and cruel. Sebastian can be viewed as a tragic figure as his malicious nature was only the result of the demon blood with which Valentine poisoned him while he was still in his mother's womb.

MAX LIGHTWOOD: The younger brother of Isabelle and Alec. He is nine years old, wears glasses, and reminded Clary of Simon at that age. He ,first, appears at the start of City of Ashes, arriving home from Alicante with his mom. He is described as small for his age with oversized glasses. According to Jace, he can sleep through just about anything.

AGRAMON: The Greater Demon of Fear. This demon doesn't has a shape, its decribed as a mass of gas at first. The power of Agramon is to appear to you as your biggest fear. He's powered by fear. He was summoned by a young warlock hired by Valentine, when summoned Agramon breaks from the pentagram, that its supposed to maintain safe the warlock and Valentine, which its impossible to cross for the demons, and kills the warlock. This warlock's biggest fear is that a demons breaks free from the pentagram, that's why Agramon was able to break free. Agramon is controlled by Valentine due to him possessing The Mortal Cup. Agramon appears to Jace as Clary very injured, this is the biggest fear for Jace; in the showdown at Valentine's Ship. Jace was wearing the Fearless rune that Clary created, and kills Agramon.

MADAME DORTHEA: The adoptive daughter of a Control Witch, who transformed half of the brownstone in Park Slope into a Sanctuary, within which was a Five-Dimensional Door. Her mother adopted her to ensure that there would be someone to look after the sanctuary after she died. The other half of the brownstone was owned by Jocelyn Fray who purchased the site in order to have quick access to the Door. Jocelyn painted a set of tarot cards for her, and in return, Dorothea would give Jocelyn Downworld gossip concerning Valentne. Dorothea opened a psychic's shop called Madame Dorothea, Seeress and Prophetess in the brownstone and used it as a sanctuary for Downworlders, whom the Clave called criminals, to be used at a price.

MAIA ROBERTS: Part of Luke's pack, turned into a werewolf by Jordan, her ex boyfriend. She is sixteen years old, with a brave determined air, and is very enthusiastic. She seems to get along well with Simon, though when he first was reborn as a vampire, she wanted to kill him. She is a curvy biracial teen, however it is said that her brother, Daniel inherited his mother's honey-colored skin. Leaving the reader to assume that Maia's skin is brown. Throught the novel, it is written that Maia wears her brown hair in tiny braids.

RAPHEAL: The leader of New York's local vampire clan. A mexican imigrant, the majority of his speech is Spanish. Changed when he and some friends went into the Vampire hotel to try and clear them out. Slight, looks fourteen, but is super strong, very polite yet deadly. Clary and Jace first run into Raphael when they enter the clan's home in an attempt to rescue Simon. The next time they encounter Raphael is when he is carrying Simon's half-dead body into the Institute. Simon was bleeding out, and his blood got into Raphael's mouth, making him Simon's sire. In the third installment of The Mortal Instruments, Raphael offers the help of the Night Children to the Clave in exchange for Simon's life. The Clave refuses, but Simon goes on his free will to garantee the help of the vampires in the final battle. At the end of the series, Raphael is at the victory party with a tall, dark haired woman in a red cocktail dress. Even by now, Raphael is neither considered friend nor foe. Raphael grew up in Mexico, as a poor boy with 6 younger brothers. He lived in a small shack and almost never saw his dad.

VALENTINE MORGENSTERN: Fifteen years ago Valentine led a band of rebel Shadowhunters against an army of Downworlders, and nearly destroyed everything it had taken the Nephilim a thousand yeas to build. When his army was defeated, he slaughtered his family and took his own life-- or did he?

MAGNUS BANE - HIGH WARLOCK: Magnus is the High Warlock of Brooklyn. He's three hundred year old, lives in a loft in Williamsburg, and likes to throw parties. Lots and lots of parties. He also likes to wear sequins, rainbow-colored leather pants, and cover himself with glitter. Lots and lots of glitter. Magnus seems like an unlikely savior, but when Clary finds his signature inside her mind, she realizes he may hold the key to the mystery of her mother's whereabouts.

LUKE GARROWAY - PACK LEADER: Luke is a jeans-and-flannel kind of guy, a friendly bookstore owner who, Clary's mother Jocelyn has always told her, is one of her oldest friends. Sometimes Clary wishes Luke was her dad-- at least until Jocelyn goes missing and Luke mysteriously refuses to help Clary find her, when Clary starts to wonder exactly what she really does know about this "old friend of the family"...

ALEC LIGHTWOOD: Isabelle's brother and the eldest of the Lightwood children, Alec is a reluctant Shadowhunter who would rather read about demons than fight them. His fierce devotion to his adoptive brother, Jace, hides a secret Alec would die to protect.

ISABELLE LIGHTWOOD: The daughter of an ancient Shadowhunting family, Isabelle glitters like the silver-gold whip she uses to snare marauding demons. She's smart, she's deadly, she's beautiful, and she doesn't seem to like Clary much-- a feeling that turns mutual once Isabelle takes a surprising interest in Simon...

SIMON LEWIS: Simon Lewis likes his life. He lives in a cool neighborhood in Brooklyn, plays drums in a band whose name changes every day, and hides a not-so-secret crush on his best friend. He's planning to tell her about it-- some day. Some day comes all too quickly when Clary's mother disappears, sucking them both into the secret world of the Shadowhunters, plunging them into mortal danger, and even more annoyingly, throwing them into the path of Jace, the blond Shadowhunter who seems to hold an irresistible fascination for Clary...

JACE WAYLAND (JACE HERONDALE: Fighting, hunting, and killing demons are the things Jace is good at. Thought the jagged scars and black runic Marks on his body are a badge of honor as far as he's concerned, he keeps a lot to himself. Like the fact that his parents were murdered by Valentine's servants in front of him when he was ten years old. There are a lot of things Jace doesn't talk about-- until he meets Clary, a mundane girl who can see him, maybe better than he can see himself. The connection that binds them will force Jace to confront black secrets of a past he never wanted to remember...

CLARY FRAY (CLARISSA MORGENSTERN): Fifteen-year-old red-headed troublemaker, artist, and anime enthusiast. Her best (and only real) friend is a boy; her mother is a forgetful artist; and her playground is the streets and nightclubs of Manhattan. Until one night she sees a group of teenagers-- who no one else can se-- kill a boy. Who turns out to not really have been a boy at all...
