One record that I think the Holmes Canon holds is the longest running literary character published by a single author. Conan Doyle's Holmes stories were written and published over the course of nearly 40 years. Not sure, but I think second place would go to the Anne Shirley saga by LM Montgomery.

Bruce That doesn’t seem accurate. Agatha Christie published her first Poirot novel in 1920 (100 years this year), and her last written one in 1972, over 50 years later. Likewise, PD James published her Adam Dalgliesh stories over a roughly 45 year period. Le Carre published a Smiley novel a few years ago, 56 years after his first one, although maybe it can be debated because Smiley isn’t always the main character in the stories.

Bruce The single author wouldn’t apply either, as there were pastiches very early, including by Mark Twain around 1900.
