June's Writing Challenge

For June's writing challenge you have to write a poem or short story using the following words in your writing (doesn't have to be in order):

- cold
- frost
- trees
- fall
- stranger
- wolf
- blood


As you are writing your poem/story please bold these words in your writing so I can tick them off.

I'd encourage you all to join in. Please don't plagiarise or harshly criticise someone else's writing. Your entry will be immediately disqualified.

So give it a go and I'll choose the winner at the end of June and YOU WILL WIN A FREE EBOOK OF YOUR CHOICE.

So be imaginative, creative and give it a go. You'll be surprise on what you come up with! :D

There's no limit, but the longer the better though. :)

I didn't plan on entering but I can come up with an example and post it.

I like to write Paranormal Romance stories and those heartache, depressing poems. I also like Chick Lit, Contemporary and Sci-fi.

What about you?

Ohh okay! I like the emotional and depressing poems as well. Apart from that I like thrillers, mysteries, some sci-fi and adventures, as long as they are fantasy :) .. That is also what I write. I love romantic elements in books though, kind of a must, but not as the central plot.

What are contemporary novels?

And I have a question... Is it alright for the short story to be written in three different chapters of must it be one single chapter?
I know I ask a lot of questions (I don't want to make a mistake) sorry ^^

It would be better as a single chapter Alice, you know then I'd rather call it story than a short one, you know what I mean?

Ahh then I'll just put it in one chapter. It will be in beteen 5500 and 6000 words, and I guess it will be a story instead of a short story as it will by far not be the end of the book :P

Ok, I've already written quite a bit and it just now came to my mind to ask this, lol. Is it ok if I have multiple POVs? I do hope you'll say yes, because all of the characters are equally important - but at the other hand, you said you'd like it all to be in a single chapter, and if I have more than one POV it can hardly be done. :/

more POV's could also be done with an empty row to seperate the view points. that way it can fit in one chapter. I thought that's the way the author of mistborn did it :)

A good way to split POV is with astrix.

Like the above with a line break before and after. The best way to switch POV is to do it in the writing using a smooth transition. If you have multiple POV characters it should be obvious who is speaking by their 'voice'. All you really need is good transitions.

I agree with both of you, and in my writing that's exactly what I've been doing, so I guess it won't be a problem than..

I guess I'll submit my entry. It is actually the first three chapters of the story, but if I'd submit the rest (which would be part 1 out of 2 or 3) I wouldn't be able to publish it anymore.. And I wanted to publish it on Smashwords.. So.. Here it is. I hope it will be enjoyable :)

If you are publishing it on Smashwords after this that is considered self-publishing so you could post the whole story if you wanted to and get feedback on the whole thing. Only if you are submitting it to actual publishing houses or agents will they not accept work that was on the internet.

Really?! Will it also be okay if I wanted to publish the story all together with the rest of the series as one book at a real publisher? Will there be a problem? Because I'd love to use the whole story for the contest :)

That would be up to the publisher. If it works as one book then they probably wouldn't have a problem but if you want to go traditional it takes a really, really long time. The story I am getting published was submitted in March, accepted in May, Revisions in June and I don't think it's getting published until July or August. And that's just short stories... novels take years through traditional means. Just something to think about :)

I'll tell you what though, if you want to just leave what you submitted for the contest and then if you want you can send me the whole thing and I'll look it over for you. That way you can leave your options open for both ways of publishing. ?

Ahh, I'm not really in a hurry with this one. I have to publish Exogenesis' sequel before I will publish anything else in a traditional way. :P I know it takes quite some time and effort, but I think it will be okay to submit the whole story afteral. I haev just finished the draft, and I am at 15.000 words now. I could easily make this part 1 out of three for a full book to publish in a traditional way :) That way the contest gets a "full" story, and I can still publish it later on. When I publish this on Smashwords, I will remove the story from here (except the first 3).

But thank you so much for your advice and for your offer. I might make a last minute change of mind and ask you for this :P I'll let you know (I think tomorrow, otherwise the day after).
