ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP Group - CDE discussion

Hi class,

This is where we will start writing about Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The chosen person (Gustavo's choice) must write a short summary of the first chapter. The objective of this is to keep a record and it should be simple, short, but complete enough for people who didn't come to class on that day to just come read the summary and understand what's happening in the story. The rest of you must read carefully what he wrote and add anything if it's necessary.

Tom in a short time was adapted in his new way life, at the same time he saw enough misery also violence from his master Legree with his companions, so he manifested his dislike to it, in consequence Legree didn´t like Tom´s attitude.
One morning when they were going to the field Tom met a new woman, whose name was Classy, at little after Tom was working when saw Lucy a mulattto woman who was very tired and can´t work anymore, he decided help her transferring several handfuls of cotton from his own sack to her, in this moment she was surprised and said him that it will get him into trouble, but Tom didn´t matter and continued helping her. Suddenly, Classy went near Tom and advised him that he wouldn´t help anybody here only would take care of his own skin.
At night the whole tired group with their baskets went up to weight the cotton, Legree was there to take note about the amount the cotton that they brought, Tom basket was weighted and approved, but when Lucy came, she didn´t bring the minimum and his master was very angry with her, at this moment he obliged Tom to hit her, but Tom confronted him saying that he never did it, and can´t do that, he preferred to die first, Legree was furious and mentioned that in the bible said “obey your master” and also his soul belong him, Tom replied that his master “only bought his body but his soul is of God”, after to listen those words Legree immediately ordered to Sambo and Kimbo give to Tom a cruel lesson as he won´t get over.
After that Tom was in an old abandoned room, suffering the torture of his wounds and praying to God, suddenly Classy came to help him, she said that is stupid confront to Legreer because he´s very strong and anybody can help him, is better to be careful by the master, then Tom asked her for his bible, she went to bring it, after to read they related about their lifes story, Cassy had two children but when she was sold she was separated from her family and during the last five years she was the property of Legree.
Early next morning Legree went where Tom was lying, he said Tom to beg pardon for his attitude, but Tom didn´t do that, because he said that he did the correct also he always going to be a true and faithful servant, to him not matter what will happen with his body, because after to die, there´s all eternity to come, and he only wait it, after he hit him, when suddenly Cassy came and defended Tom, in that moment he said that he wanted all his slaves but then he promised to avenge of them..Legree turned and went out.
