I read fantasy a lot growing up. I got out of the habit of reading it until I got into college/vet school. I really got hooked back into it after I read Anita Blake. For the past several years, I have been dipping my toe into epic fantasy big time. I've been a huge urban fantasy fan for about ten years.

For those who read a lot of fantasy, which ones do you enjoy and recommend?

Missyb | 98 comments Jeaniene Frost - (Night Huntress) funny, sexy, action, vamires, ghouls, witches, demons. Main couple meet under trying circumstance and get together and make a great pairing and strong couple. Good core group of supporting characters.

Charlain Harris - (Sookie Stackhouse)funny, action, romance/sex. Main character throughout (Sookie), and core group that is in almost every book with some that are in only a few books. Vampires, shapeshifters, fae, religous fanatics.

Kim Harrison - (Rachel Morgan) funny, action. Main 3 characters throughout and a supporting group that is in most of the books. witches, vampires, fairies, pixies, wolfs, demons, elfs.

Lynsay Sands - (Argeneau) funny, action, sex/romance. Each book is about a different couple, but 2 tend to pop up in many of the books. Vampires.

Jennifer Ashley - (Shifters Unbound) action, sex/romance, some humor. Each book is about a different couple but some characters are in each book.Shifters, politics.

LA Banks - (Crimson Moon) action, romance/sex. Main couple and they're associates in every book.wolfs, fae, military, science.

Shelly Laurenston - (Magnus Pack, Pride) shifters. Each book is about a different couple, but many characters are in each book. Humor, action, sex/romance.

Pamela Palmer - (Feral Warriors) shifters, demons, some mythology. Sex, action, violence, romance. Very action packed.

Sherrilyn Kenyon - (Dark Hunter) shifters, warriors (sometimes called vampires), daemons, Greek mythology, Greek Gods/Goddeses. Each book is about a different couple, Acheron is in each book and so are a few others.

Kerrily Sparks - (Love at Stakes) vampires, shifters. Action, romance, mystery, government agencies, humor, Scottish guys. Each book is about a different couple but the overall arc carries over and many characters do to. Different take on vampires then most books.

My favorite fantasy books :(mainly because they're fantasy romance)

Tairen Soul series by C.L. Wilson

Warprize series by Elizabeth Vaughan

Fantasy series by Kristen Ashley

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments I second Kim Harrison - (Rachel Morgan). It is one of my favorite series.

Also, Kresely Cole's Imortals after Dark series is really good. Each book is a different couple but they all tie together and the over arching story continues through all the books.

Oh and Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld was really good. Once again each book focuses on a different couple but all the books tie together.

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments If you don't mind dark that gets darker with no shade/hope of HEA, then I recommend the Game of Thrones series (A song of fire and Ice, I think it's called?) by George RR Martin.

Sable Grey's Dark Breeds series is good too. And Lauren Dane's Goddess with a Blade by Lauren Dane is a very good one - I just finished it.

Awilk -never sleeps- (awilk) | 98 comments My favourite fantasy writer was David Eddings. My favourite series was The Elenium, which has three books, and the story is continued with the Tamuli, which was another three books. It was about Church Knights fighting evil and going on an epic adventure. Sparhawk is still one of my favourite male characters of all time.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish One of my favorite fantasy series is Maria V. Snyder's Poison Study books.

Teresa (teresatheduchessofread) | 91 comments I am a big fan of Lynn Flewelling. I adored the Tamir Triad:
~Bone Dolls Twin
~Hidden Warrior
~Oracle's Queen

Gail Z.Martin's Chronicles of the Necromancer Series:
~The Summoner
~The Blood King
~Dark Haven
~Dark Ladies Choosen

Brent Weeks Night Angle Trilogy:
~Way of the Shadows
~Shadow's Edge
~Beyond the Shadows

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Novels:
~Mistborn : Final Empire Series (Book #1) (Mistborn, Book 1)
~The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, Book 2)
~The Hero of Ages: Book Three of Mistborn (Mistborn Trilogy)

Fantasy is my first love in reading, so I'm sure I am forgetting a series of two.

Kat Black (kat_black_author) | 23 comments If you'd like some fantasy with a sexy edge, Jacqueline Carey's sweeping Kushiel series is fabulous. Also I'd second Megan's suggestions for the wonderful C.L. Wilson and the Warlands chronicles by Elizabeth Vaughan

I loved this book and can't wait for the second in August.

I like Yasmine Galenorn with her Otherworld series - which dances between UF and fantasy and then Kinley MacGregor with the Lords of Avelon.

Alicia Maybach (PaperShredder) | 8 comments Not sure if this series has been mentioned yet. But I believe in falls into the Epic Fantasy area, and holy smokes, it's good! Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels, #1) by Anne Bishop
If I could go back in time and read this series over, I totally would! Hands down!

message 18: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (lindsayrs) | 3 comments Song of Ice and Fire by George R R Martin
No compare! Epic with plots and subplots. Turned a normal socially acceptable me into the biggest game of thrones nerd ever! And proud of it

I was trying to remember that one myself, Alicia, as it is so good! I'm also a big S.M. Stirling and Mercedes Lackey (early works especially) fan. And Stephen Lawhead's The Paradise War (The Song of Albion, #1) by Stephen R. Lawhead was a 5 star for me.
