Amanda (lyrrael) | 11 comments Prelude: I love this book. I LOVE this book. I love this series. Again, listening as an audio book, and I was a little apprehensive when the publisher said they weren't releasing books 4 and 5 as audio books, since the narrator was outstanding and the book's honestly well served being narrated. A lot aren't. I was overjoyed to find out they'd changed their minds.

When the release date came last week, and I couldn't find it on Audible? Yes, I was that fangirl on the phone with Blackstone Audio, raring at the bit to find out where my dang book was. And I lost two days to listening to it, when I really had work to do.

On that note, this book is outstanding. Chess is so terribly broken, and you sit there utterly rooting for her and hoping she'll clean up her mess, and yet understanding that she's doing the absolute best she can in a situation that she's totally unprepared to handle. Some authors are cruel to their leads; I think Ms. Kane must be some sort of sadist -- anything that can possibly go wrong, does. And yet, that's what makes her seem so real, so human. Chess's terror is completely communicable, reasoned out, and constant, and I'm always hoping with my heart in my throat that she'll somehow muddle through and say something, do something, that'll help dig herself out just a little bit.

Anyway. The spoiler's at the end, and this is my question (spelling optional since I don't know the real spelling of any of these names anyway)...

How on earth did they get ahold of Slowbag anyway? I acknowledge that it serves the overall plot VERY well, but I just don't understand how they could have gotten past the toughs any sane drug lord would take with him everywhere, even (and especially) to a hit by a rival gang. Where were they? How'd they get him? I DON'T GET IT.

Grump.

Anyway. Team Terrible. Seriously, dude, yes.
