Jorge (jsalgueiro) | 68 comments Hi

Fernando Pessoa (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...) signed several books with his own name and others with several heteronyms, namely:

Álvaro de Campos (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...)
Ricardo Reis (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...)
Alberto Caeiro (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...)

Each heteronym has a different style, from each other and from Pessoa himself, and Pessoa intended them to be treated autonomously. This has been common practive ever since.

Here in GR some librarians have opted for 1) listing only Fernando Pessoa; 2) listing only the apropriate heteronym; 3) listing Fernando Pessoa as the main author and the heteronym as co-author, adding as role 'heteronym'; and 4) listing the heteronym as the main author and Fernando Pessoa as co-author.

I don't mind untangling this, but before I do I would like to know which approach you consider best. Personally I favour 3): it maintains the heteronyms as entities, which Portuguese readers will appreciate; and by listing Pessoa as the main author, it facilitates combining versions, I think.

There is yet another problem. The profile Ricardo Reis (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...) comprises two different authors: one is the heteronym of Fernando Pessoa, the other is a very real person, editor of several books on information technology. Any ideas on how to separate them?

Cheers,
Jorge

Jorge (jsalgueiro) | 68 comments The Ricardo Reis who is editor of books on information technology is a professor at UFRGS, a Brasilian university. So for clarity sake maybe he could be referred as 'Prof. Ricardo Reis', to differentiate him from the heteronym of Pessoa?

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Each book should be listed under the name of the author it was published under.

If a book is published under different names then the primary author is the name the book was first published under to allow for combining, followed by the additional name.

The other names can be added in the secondary/tertiary name positions.

Disambiguation of authors is done by adding a space between the names, GR Policy is not to use honerifics.

Links to the different author profiles should be placed in the author profile

Jorge (jsalgueiro) | 68 comments Ok, I linked Fernando Pessoa's profile to the heteronyms', that was easy.

I typed a one-liner linking Alberto Caeiro and Álvaro de Campos back to Fernando Pessoa, that was easy too. (Later on I will try to add more info on the heteronyms.)

Then I was going to separate the two people under Ricardo Reis. My plan was to leave one space for the Pessoa heteronym and use two spaces for the Brasilian professor. But there's already a Ricardo Reis with two spaces, totally unrelated to the first two. Do I go for three spaces?

Amara Tanith (aftanith) If Ricardo^^Reis is not the same as either of the authors included under Ricardo^Reis, then yes, time for three spaces.

Jorge (jsalgueiro) | 68 comments The Ricardos are sorted:
1) Ricardo Reis
2) Ricardo Reis
3) Ricardo Reis

Now to sort out the books proper :)

Jorge (jsalgueiro) | 68 comments The more common approach so far seems to be to list Fernando Pessoa as the main author and the heteronym as co-author, so I'll stick to that. I'll just fix the discrepancies.
