Thanks for the info. Leila. Glad you got it at least. It's back to 99 cents now, but I guess I can't put it on the giveaway thread. (there was a big problem with Canadians not being able to download the free book).

message 40: by Dara (new)

Dara J. (djluri) | 21 comments Hi Folks,

From Friday, May 24th - Sunday, May 26th, you can download my book Great Space of Desire: Writing for Personal Evolution for free. The book is a memoir & creative workbook for writers. http://ow.ly/lj17K

My initial inspiration for writing this book was to chronicle my experience growing up in my aunt's ballet school in the penthouse studio of Carnegie Hall. This was in the mid 1960's - before Alvin Ailey & Arthur Mitchell - so there were very few black dancers in the world of ballet. Yet somehow my aunt (Marion Facey) managed to open a school at the top of Carnegie Hall with the mission of integrating ballet. It was an amazing experience for me and I wanted to chronicle both the public and private aspects of this time.

But the ballet story proved to be only the starting point of my story which ultimately leads to Vassar college in the late 70's & early 80's and further to West Berlin, Germany before, during and after the Fall.

I'll be doing a book giveaway at the end of the summer so, if you enjoy reading the Kindle version, let me know and I'll enter your name for the book giveaway.

PS - I wouldn't say 'no' to review offers on Amazon

Dara J. (djluri) | 21 comments Hi Everyone-

My memoir & creative writer's guide is available for free download from today - May 24th - Sunday, May 26th.

Readers have given this book a 5 star review on Amazon.

Here are what some reviewers say about Great Space of Desire:

Equally as engaging and heartfelt as Jeanette Walls’ memoir, The Glass Castle, Dara Lurie’s memoir, Great Space of Desire- Writing for Personal Evolution chronicles the courageous life of a woman growing up black, white and Jewish, who struggles to feel “valid and normal.” Especially poignant is Ms. Lurie’s relationship with her mother, whose aspirations to dance with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo were dashed merely because of her skin color.

Not only does Dara Lurie inspire my desire to be more creative in my writing, she delights and amazes me with her own story.

Great Space of Desire is interesting hybrid of a memoir and a writer’s aid, fulfills both purposes fully and beautifully.

Honest, open, inspiring, thought provoking, interesting; this book is well worth your time. If you are a writer, the exercises and activities are there for the taking, if you are not a writer, you will still appreciate the journey.

I hope you'll take advantage of this free download from May 24-26th. And, if you enjoy, please leave me a review!

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 110 comments Hi Memoir Lovers,

My reviews on Amazon (particularly UK) and Goodreads seem to have come to a standstill. If you think you might enjoy my book Lesbian Crushes and Bulimia: A Diary on How I Acquired My Eating Disorder and could commit to posting a review within the next three weeks, I would be very happy to let you have a copy in a digital format of your choice.

Many thanks,
Natasha

message 43: by Judith (new)

Judith Newton (ursula70) | 19 comments Amazon giveaway of IPPY Award winning food memoir Tasting Home next week on June 6-8, Thursday through Saturday. Latest review: “A book that will speak to your heart as well as your taste buds, TASTING HOME proves to be real food for your soul.” C.A. Webb. http://www.amazon.com/Tasting-Home-Co...

If Julia Child had cooked Italian for a gay husband, used sugar to sweeten a sour childhood, and hosted buffets for a better world, she could have written Tasting Home: Coming of Age in the Kitchen.

In this food memoir, Judith Newton shares the unforgettable story of a life on the front lines of activism and in the kitchen. During a difficult childhood, food and cooking were sources of comfort and emotional sustenance. And in the decades to come, through her marriage to a gay man, her discovery of feminism, her life in a commune, and her career as an academic, she used food to sustain personal and political relationships, mourn losses, and celebrate victories. As she earned her activist stripes in the 1960s and beyond, she also learned how food could ease tension, foster community, and build cross-racial ties.

Organized by decade and by the cookbooks that shaped the author’s life, Tasting Home takes readers on a journey through the cuisines, cultural spirit, and politics of the 1940s through the 2000s. Seasoned with scenes of cooking and dining, it brings readers to the table, inviting them to feel how deeply food is tied to identity, love, community, and political engagement.

Read essays based on the memoir at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/judith-... “A Valentine For My Gay Ex-Husband,” February 7, 2013; “Reclaiming the Kitchen: Women’s History Month Meets the Food Justice Movement,” March 4, 2013;”How I Said Goodbye to a Difficult Mother,” May 10, 2013.
