After reading the summary, you must come to this post and discuss your opinions of the story... what part you liked, felt identified with, what you felt, what you didn't like, what impressions it caused you (positive and negative). After writing your impressions, you must comment on at least ONE OTHER PERSON's reflections; saying if you agree or don't agree with his/her impressions/ideas and WHY. I can't wait to read them, so, let the comments begin!

Rosana Ferreira | 80 comments The two last chapters for me were very sad because first Mr. George came late to buy Tom and finally Tom died, the end was the saddest, but was the reality of Tom and also many slaves , I am sorry about Tom´s family especially aunt Chloe, she was expecting the return of Tom, but unfortunately tom died, I remember a phrase “ The human being only we are passengers in the world", Tom suffered too much, he helped many people, and now he went to receive his biggest dream, his recompense ” the freedom”, that made feel happy, I think when we do good actions late or early always are rewarded by happiness, and the bad actions are rewarded by sadness.
Read this book show me the story, conditions, feelings of the slaves and people in that time, and examples of lifes I never imagined, I learned more about the values that sometimes I forgot of real meaning, is really good to read this kind of book that can open our mind and teach us the importance of the life because in comparison of the slaves we have the freedom, and more opportunities, we have to analyze our life situation and try to be better persons each day more..

Camila | 65 comments Ok, the ending of the story was sad, I didn`t hope that ending.
I like the part when Master George went to Legree`s plantation to buy his old friend Tom again, he wanted to return to his house with Tom.. But unfortunately it was late. What Master George did it was something that any Master would do, he was decide to buy Tom and have the life that they had before.. so, it is very sad to know that this story finished with Tom`s death because he always had the hope to see his family again and his family was hoping Tom`s return, I think that what Aunt Chole was feeling nobody could describe, her heart was broken, all her hope to see her husband again went down…..I think that if somebody pass for something like that would be very difficult to bear, because to lose a person that you love, that is part of your family will be very, very sad.
But I`m not very sad by the ending of the story, because now Tom is in a better place, without problems, he is free now! I`m feel good for that.
I like the story; it was sad, but good for us because we learned many things about the life before, especially of the slaves.

Juana | 54 comments I said , Tom is ready to die. He did what he had to do. Now , is time to rest. For me, these two chapters were the saddest. Finally George found Tom. I'm happy because Tom didn't die alone, was George, and was burried for him. I think is very sad to find a friend in that situation, I didn't like his end. Because he didn't see his family, to the aunt Chloe.. But he is fine, because he knows he is going to a good place , to the paradise, but I'm not sure if it exists. We are not sure of that. On the other hand, I'm happy for Emmeline and Cassy, they were free , although I thought their plan wasn't good. This story was very interesting, made us think about our acts. Showed the important of the family, the faith. But depends of each one the learning received with this story.

I agree with you Rosana, that phrase is really true, we only are passengers in the world, we don`t know when our life in this land will finish, we have to be ready for that, we don`t have to do bad things, we always have to go by the good way.
I think Tom did everything that he could do before death, he didn`t do anything wrong, and I hope now he would be in the place where he always thought and wanted to be.
He`s now with his true Master, God… he always served God.. I`m happy for that.. he deserved be happy after all the bad things that happened .

Karen Portillo | 73 comments This Chapter was too sad, yes, because Tom die, when I read, I can't believe, because I think that Legree will be more pacific, and not go extremely, but now we see that Legree don't have heart, until He kill Tom, but, I think Tom want that He got his freedom with die, that's a thing that is too sad, but that leave us a message, in a moment we going to have our freedom, early or late, and depends if you were a good person, all thing that you do or did, be rewarded, so, I like this book, because taught us how was in that period, the hardest life that Slaves pass, so, I hope that this book help me in many part of my life, because taught me too how to be a moral person. so, Tom is an inspiration, and the slaves too...

Karen Portillo | 73 comments Rossana wrote: "I am sorry about Tom´s family especially aunt Chloe, she was expecting the return of Tom, but unfortunately tom died" Yes, that's true, and sometimes we must have to be prepared for all things, because we don't know what will happen tomorrow, so, day to day, we have to thanks because we have all things that we want, we have to laugh, to enjoy the life, and I think Tom did it, at the form that He can, He was so spiritual and that help him to pass all things, in many times.

message 9: by Kathia (new)

Kathia Roman | 58 comments Tom was the hero of this story, unfortunately the did not deserve to die, but he is resting in a better place now, free from abuse
It was one of the best slave he was always patient and wise in making decisions, a role model certainly and never forget to help others and he's doubt his faith in God
this story learned the importance of having a life free, often we complain about the bad things that happen to us, but they are evidence that God gives us to be better
the family plays an important role in our lives and that they are the support we need to go ahead and above all never give up hope about dreams. "f you want you can"

message 10: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Portillo | 30 comments The end of the story made me feel very sad, how an honest, humble, with that big heart can die? ... Well, honestly I did not expect his death because a person as Tom does not deserved to die in that way, but now we know that he is free, in a better place with God.
This story really excited me a lot and also made me understand how was the situation of the slaves. Racism is an example of the lack of ignorance of a human, and that's what Tom has shown in all these chapters, the value of a human is in the nobility and honesty of his conduct, not in the color skin.

message 11: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Portillo | 30 comments Rosana wrote: ‘‘I remember a phrase “ The human being only we are passengers in the world"
I totally agree with you, we do not know when will be the end of our lives, as Camila said we are only passengers, but what we know is that we must always do good things, help others and also remember our Creator, he gave his life for us and we must be thankful for one more day of life.

message 12: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Portillo | 30 comments Juana wrote: ‘’Tom is ready to die. He did what he had to do. Now , is time to rest.’’
I agree with you, Tom knew that he could be killed, but also he was ready because he knew that God was by his side, he did all the rights things, always thought of others before himself and put his soul in God's hands.

Rociog (rocinhagon) | 68 comments In the Ch. 19 we should notice how the destiny can be, Mr. George found Tom's place after many months, what would have happened if he found him before? Maybe our story would have a happier ending. Did Legree think that talking bad about Tom would stop Mr. George interest in him? Empty persons always think that changing with words the appearance or personality of somebody can fool the person who really knows him.
The impulsiveness of the young master after knowing what was the state of Tom isn't surprising, we react so when it is about our loved one.

I can't imagine how was the feeling of young master when he saw Uncle Tom in that state...

"The Lord's bought me, and is going to—to take me home—and I want to go. Heaven is better than Kentuck."
I've never seen someone who really wanted to die, it is very sad that one person has suffered so much on Earth, I wonder how many more are suffering right now as he was.
I find cute hao Tom tried to protect Aunt Chloe of sadness.
The negroes called George Master even when he isn't their master, it was surprising for them seeing a master who give so much importance to his slave.
Aunt Chloe's part of the story is very sad, before she lost Tom physically but then she lost him spiritually too with no hopes to see him again for one last word... The book doesn't describe Tom's children feelings, I'd like to know it.

The negative part is that after losing one appreciate being we reflect about our actions, why didn't Mr. George free his slaves before? He waited until find Tom dying to do it. I feel pain for those slaves who didn't want to leave, they had their reasons, they were private of education and even in that period it would be difficult to survive, and we are talking about the period of the highest black people discrimination...

The beginning of this book was boring and the ending wasn't what I was expecting, however I liked it, because it opened my mind and taught me a lot of things about life and human beings behavior!

...when I read, I can't believe, because I think that Legree will be more pacific...
I thought the same, but finally we knew the true, how can a person kill in the attempts to get whet he want.
We do the same, but not killing physically, sometimes we kill other hopes or feelings to get what we wanted. We do it, without realizing it.

Rebecca | 55 comments Chapters 19 and 20 must be commented together, because the one is the compliment of the other.
Suddenly, the son of Mr. Shelby, George arrives to where Tom is after a long research. Unfortunately, he arrives late: Tom is dying, he tells to his former good master to only say he was going to glory, and he miss everybody. Such a sad line! I didn't expect that one of the Shelbys was going to look for him - but who else could do that? At least, he didn't die alone, but I find a better consolation in thinking that he's going to Heaven. He used to say there are many ways to be free, there is where he really wanted to go, God is his only master... this reminds me a sentence I read once: "Perhaps we must be going to be very happy when we are dead for God to let this life have all the tortures and all the sorrows"
When his family, especially Chloe, and the rest of the people in Shelby's place received the bad new, I was so sad for everybody!
I liked Master George's decision to free all the slaves, he understood that slavery was guilty for all the suffering of Tom.
This is a moving and human book, I must read the original version! :P

Good expression Rosana, but I think there's freedom where we want, I mean, we choose where our kind of freedom, for example: Some students find studying as freedom, and other find dancing as freedom.
Freedom depends of our point of view. It is the same with slavery, we right now might be slaves of TV or whatever, there are many kinds of slavery in our globalized world.

I agree with you. I often think that if you do what you must do on life, you musn't be afraid of death, because your mission is complete and your work is done. That's what happened to Uncle Tom. He followed his heart and had a sad but beautiful life.
I'm not sure either is there is heaven o hell, but I think if you have faith on that you believe, if will exist for you. I mean, maybe there's no God, but if I believe He's real, to me, at least, will be real. *This only applies on potentially unquestionable, morally good and abstract beings*
Yeah, it's self-contradictory and too relative, but I don't want to have a metaphysics discussion because it will be too long and that's not my point: What I mean is to have faith and believe in something bigger and better gives us a strenght hard to explain, and as you said, this story depends of what kind of lesson gives us. For me, was to be patient, to fight when it is necessary -maybe this was Tom's mistake but if he did that the story wouldn't be the same- and to keep hope.

Rosana Ferreira | 80 comments Rocio wrote: “The negative part is that after losing one appreciate being we reflect about our actions”, I agree with you, unfortunately is true, nobody do anything or react before happen bad things, always is after, when is very late, is really sad! But for other hand we have to learn of our mistakes and then to try to do the best..if we want to change, we can change!!

I liked your expression Andrea, is sad to know that people until now have the same thinking and discriminate the other people who have other color of skin, I think this is the consequence of the people who don´t want to change their minds and continue with this terrible custom…I think we know the person by his feeling and not by the appearance, that is the important!

Those chapters were incredibles for me. Because it was the end that I didn't expect, but the end that I want.

I think Master George had good luck when he found the information about where is Tom. Also I like the reaction of Master George when Legree didn't recive him very well, He just ask for Tom and didn't give any attention.

I didn't like when Tom was dying and Master George found him and wanted to take him but he rejected it, but I like when He said to M. George to lie and tell to Mrs Shelby and Aunt Chloe that he was in glory.
Really I wanted to Tom has the freedom and back with his family, but He couldn't.

"Poor Tom!" I said when I read the paragraph where he die.. I didn't like the book when we started, but then I like it.

I agree with you! He deserves to rest of so much suffering. He did many good things for others people and also he die as a good man without tell to Legree where Cassy and Emmeline located. He was an example.

They were really the saddest chapters.
I agree with you.. I think Master George saw all the life that had Tom and He wanted to finish with the suffering that his slaves could have in the future. I think is was a good decition fom everyone.

Raquelgonzalez | 62 comments I Waited so much! for both chapters!
well , it's I like the performance how the writer try to present the slavery lifes years ago, and some especific situation to us know , what happen in that moment, with a interesting book, ! aparently it's has a good end for me, because tom , the poor slave, main character before he suffer so much, he take a rest in Lord presence, the chapters teach us , and have a particular message for each of us , according to our received it , when you do whatever you work, before have a recompense, tom for ex: he was a good servent, and people, sadly he received but he died with satisfaction the do all it near to his posibility! !

I agree I liked! that is a beautiful words! yes! we are passenger in the world!, but I disagree our behavior our is as if we were eternal in the land, ! fortunately tom receive, he deserve it! the freedom is good when you know the correctly form to use! and enjoy it!

I agree with you, yeah, I good reason to do by master George's, to give the oportunity to others, I considered IT'S A lesson he doesn't have finally to enjoy with his good servent, but this bad moment he was passed with him, built his sensibility , and considered that's the best solution maybe in Tom memory!

message 28: by Raquelgonzalez (new)

Raquelgonzalez | 62 comments I liked these phrases rocio WROTE: his recompense ” the freedom”...!
the realy freedom he received in GOD'S time, nobody KNOW when we can die, and Tom TRUST until the end in God's MERCY! and in his promise! he wait in it!

message 29: by José (new)

José (josemtorres) | 15 comments Seriously, this end wasn't expected for me. The end of the book was sad but happy. Tom finally got his freedom, but not in the way I was expecting. I really felt sad, because I was hoping Tom to go back with his family, therefore have a "perfect" life.
That little action that Mr. George made, the fact that he went to "get" Tom back, just showed me how kind and gentle he was, he really loved Tom. Because no one in that time would do the same. After, when he gave all the slaves the freedom, I really think he did that because he thought he was like stealing their lifes, instead of being in happiness outside, gettin their own money, but he was like wrong, because the slaves didn't leave, they just stood in there, with George, they weren't prepared to go and confront the real life.
I really learnt with this book, that I have to be faithful and strong in the hardest time of my life, someday, I'll get my appreciate Freedom, It doesn't matter how :D
