It might be 2012 but we still all love the elegance and decadence of the Victorian period, or the eloquence of the Elizabethians. Charles Dickens, the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen are still as popular today as they were a hundred years ago, and revisited also now on film and television.
Some of my favourites would have to include, Jane Austen to begin with whom is the most sucsessful female writer of her age and one whom we all love so much today. Works such as Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park, Sense & Sensibility, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are fine examples of english literature at its very best.

Who would you choose to be; an Emma Woodhouse, perhaps a Fanny Pice or an Elizabeth Bennet?

I loved Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley in it and omg Mr. Darcy, Matthew Macfadyen, he was wonderful. I'm not usually one for romance but for some reason I can't resist Jane Austen. :)

She is just a fantastic writer & i think that the story of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet is the most highly reconized throughout English literature universally. If you asked anyone about a 'Mr. Darcy' then 99% of the time, they would understand whom you were referring to!

...Personally i would probably be a Catherine Morland from Northanger Abbey, as i spend too long with my head in books 'daydreaming'! x

Jane Austen is wonderful but her real life story is somewhat tragic. For all the romance she created, she had none of her own.

I know...it is so heartbreakingly sad. Have you seen the films 'Becoming Jane' and/ or 'Miss Austen Regrets' at all, as they are about her life??

I have seen becoming Jane. The ending was so sad! Like I said before not a big romance fan but still, I want it to end happily.

Two of my favorite books are Pride & Prejudice and Emma. My favorite movie version of Pride & Prejudice is the BBCs mini-series with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. He's absolutely perfect in that role and he's who I see when I read the book! :) I would either be Elizabeth or Emma - love both their characters.

I love the origional version of 'Pride & Prejudice' with Colin Firth in it! For my a'level in Enlgish Literature (during my second year) the two texts for Unit 4 that i shall be studying, will be both Emma & Pride and Prejudice; cannot wait! at least this part of my exam will be a little more familiar, as i have grown up with Austen. x

I love Jane Austen and the Brontes. My favourite adaptations being Pride and Predudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northham and Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens.

Great choices! I loved the origonal Pride & prejudice with Colin Firth whom i thought was fantastic in the role as Mr. Darcy. I also loved the Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow who was so elegant and gentile, just a perfect 'emma' whom i had visualized when reading the book.

...regarding other timeless classics who likes 'Little Women'? I loved the story as a child, which is so heartwarming and touching. I particularly loved the character of Jo, with her dreams and her passion and spirit.

I loved Little Women as a kid. The film staring June Allyson and Peter Lawford will always be my favorite, it's the one I grew up with and I watched it dozens of times.

The American version is quite different to this one (above) x

I would say that a time-less class is Gone With The Wind even though I can't watch it too many times over the course of the months because Scarlett is really irksome to me and over all it's rather sad.

The other day i saw 'Anne of Green Gables'. It is such a beautiful story of love, friendship and humility.

I absolutely love 'Anne of Green Gables'. Watched it as a kid, read all the books, fell in love with Gilbert. Wonderful!

Me too!!! I just loved the first movie but after watching the whole four movies, I went back and watched several tribduts to Anne of Green Gables and the trailer for the musical: Anne and Gilbert and I fell in love with them instead.

I love it when at the end of the second half of the film, he rides up to her on a black horse and gives her his place at the University...x

I have to say I'm a sucker for any guy who rides up on a black horse, or any horse come to that. Lol.

I just love gentlemen who can dance the waltz with grace and skill and over all amazing talent like Mr. Darcy but then laugh with me like Mr. Knightley.

They must be able to dance, ride a horse and combine both seriousness with the ocasional whit! :)

The Secret Garden

I love The Secret Garden and The Little Princess the best!!!

The Little Princess is so sad! There is certainly a film that i cannot keep dry eyes watching x

I often cried inside when I watched the old black and white one with Shirley Temple which had a better ending because her father came back even though he was supposed to have died and she would have ended up living with the indian gentleman.

Because I would like prayer for the victims and the families who lost friends and family members who were killed by the maniac in the midnight showing of The Dark Knight rises and pray that the victims will show improvement. The more recent version of Pride & Prejudice is really lively, and a lot more colourful than the older version; which is more detailed and lengthy. They are both good but i do feel that the modern version is in a way more authentic, because you could actually imagine it happening?? The dark haired outging Lizzie who falls for Colin Firth is how i would envision the character in my head.

Winona Ryder as Jo March and Christian Bale as Laurie in "Little Women." I LOVED that Movie.

I lOVE little women. I have always loved JO as a character in both the book and the film, as she is a heroine of mine - persuing her writing career as well as not following in the 'steriotypical' lady fashion - i admire her greatly.

Is Little Women the one where the one sister sells her hair to buy the other sister something and then that sister bought a brush or something like that?

is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, now made into a film with Kiera Knightly.

Synopis:

Anna Karenina is the tragedy of married aristocrat and socialite Anna Karenina and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The story starts when she arrives in the midst of a family broken up by her brother's unbridled womanizing—something that prefigures her own later situation, though with less tolerance for her by others.
A bachelor, Vronsky is willing to marry her if she would agree to leave her husband Karenin, a government official, but she is vulnerable to the pressures of Russian social norms, her own insecurities and Karenin's indecision. Although Vronsky eventually takes Anna to Europe where they can be together, they have trouble making friends. Back in Russia, she is shunned, becoming further isolated and anxious, while Vronsky pursues his social life. Despite Vronsky's reassurances she grows increasingly possessive and paranoid about his imagined infidelity, fears losing control.
A parallel story within the novel is of Levin, a country landowner who desires to marry Kitty, sister to Dolly and sister-in-law to Anna's brother Oblonsky. Levin has to propose twice before Kitty accepts. The novel details Levin's difficulties managing his estate, his eventual marriage, and personal issues, until the birth of Levin's first child.


Anna Karenina is commonly thought to explore the themes of hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, fidelity, family, marriage, society, progress, carnal desire and passion, and the agrarian connection to land in contrast to the lifestyles of the city.[4] Translator Rosemary Edmonds wrote that Tolstoy doesn't explicitly moralise in the book, he allows his themes to emerge naturally from the "vast panorama of Russian life." She also says one of the novel's key messages is that "no one may build their happiness on another's pain."
