Debbie (dashforcover) This is about life in the pioneering years in Oregon. We follow the main character as he leaves the Ferry Station where he has grown up. He has the Law on his heels and he has decided to throw his lot in with some Traveling people. They cross Oregon, sometimes stopping to work at harvesting crops and then moving on until they reach the coast. He and the daughter of the Traveler have set up a household and, as things don't work out for them there, they head out again with a group of others, back across the state looking for a place to make their home.

The book does a good job describing the very dry high desert plains of central and eastern Oregon. I sometimes got lost in when this book is actually set. Was Oregon a state yet or not? I don't know. But I did enjoy the book.
