Abdulrazak Gurnah comes from Tanzania and features in both African lists, goodreads and African history. The one I am reading at the moment, Paradise, is excellent and made the Booker short list, but would not make me want to visit the region. There is A Grain of Wheat and others by the same author from Kenya.
Alexander McCall Smith's series " No1 Ladies Detective Agency" set in Botswana.
The one I would recommend though is Nervous Conditions, which is a coming of age story set in Zimbabwe, which is roughly in the right region.
There is also a good book about the Serengeti National Park, which I read many years ago and can't remember the title. If I do remember, or find the book, I will let you know.
