I apologize that I just saw this post and responding a year later but i do have advice for beginner cosplayers since I was once a beginner too.
For beginners, it's best to choose an easy costume that you are able to alter clothes without it being way over your head or you can buy it from ebay or so. You will also want to think about your cosplay budget because they can get pretty pricy depending on what you do. I like to choose cosplays that have the same hair color and hair type as my natural hair or that fit the wigs I already have so then I'm not spending too much money since I need transportation to the cons and stuff I might want to buy.
If you don't feel comfortable in altering your first cosplay you can also buy it from ebay or something or commission which you buy the fabric and another cosplayer makes it but commission can be more expensive than buying online.
Hope that helps ^.^
