I went to Charleston for the first time in May of this year, while I was reading The Lords of Discipline. It was a vivid experience actually seeing the streets and houses that are depicted in the book. It made for an enhanced reading experience. I loved the city: the architecture; the food; the people. I hope to return.
I had visited Charleston when I was younger, but had only a vague recollection of the city when I read the novel "The Lords of Discipline". However, I returned to the city a month after reading the novel and was able to point out many of the things described in the book. While walking around one afternoon I even saw a Tradd Street! Pat Conroy's attention to detail is amazing.
This was the first Conroy book that I have read, and having visited there a number of times, I can say that he even got that part right (among everything else). Will loves the city, and in turn, so do you.
