i'd have to say that mine are:
1. On the Road by Jack Kerouac
2. Franny and Zooey by JD Salinger

I used to read a decent amount of classics. I haven't been reading them, or much of anything, lately. :(My top 3:
1. Little Women
2. 1984
3. Pride and Prejudice
definitely need to read Little Women and Pride and Prejudice! ahh..i really need to crack down and read some classics!
My absolute favourite is Jane Eyre. And then I cannot seem to choose the other two (because there are several).
Here are my favorites:1. Gone With the Wind
2. Pride and Prejudice
3. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
(4. would be The Grapes of Wrath or the Count of Monte Cristo, so good!)
I would have to go with:1) East of Eden
2) War and Peace
3) Crime and Punishment
(You can't go wrong with Steinbeck and the Russians!)
hmm...not a big fan of classics...as Mark Twain said "Classics are books that everyone wants to have read and no one wants to read" That being said, I do have a fondness for The Catcher in the Rye
1984
The Handmaid's Tale
also if you're including children's classics then I would say
Peter Pan
The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn
Betsy-Tacy
2 "classics" sections here because I can't choose!Novels...
1) The Count of Monte Cristo
2) Wuthering Heights
3) The Scarlet Letter
Plays...
1) A Midsummer Night's Dream
2) Antigone/Oedipus Rex
3) Hamlet or Othello
OOO I still need to read the Count of Monte Cristo, Wuthering Heights, and War And Peace. Oh yes and Franny and Zooey.I love all of the other books mentioned, though!
I don't think you can go wrong with:Gone With The Wind (my favorite book)
To Kill a Mockingbird
Catch-22
They are very diverse books and ones I would rank as my favorites. That said, The Fountainhead, Peyton Place, A Farewell to Arms, and The Bell Jar are all pretty fantastic. I'm working on ready some older classics, so I'll get back to you later with more.
My faves:1. Persuasion by Jane Austen
2. Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
3. Animal Farm by George Orwell
But that's just right now. In two minutes I might make a completely different list because my favorites change all the time.
My top 3 favourite classics:1. Jane Austen's Persuasion
2. E.M. Forster's A Room With a View
3. Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South
Only 3? Difficult to choose...
1) Jane Eyre- Charlotte Bronte
2) Wuthering Heights- Emily Bronte
3) Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austin

3) Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austin
This summer I am all about reading more classics! Then I will be able to participate in this thread :)
One of my long term goals is to finish the classics. I'm drawn to them more than to modern fiction, so I already own a lot of them. But sometimes they take forever to read!
I agree..sometimes I tend to take so long with them that I dread picking up my next one. Any particular one that you think I read next?
Catch-22 and The Fountainhead are both pretty good. I'm actually planning on re-reading Catch-22 sometime soon, so we could read it together.
I will warn you that not everyone likes Catch-22 because the logic of it is hard to follow for some people. That's usually the deciding factor in whether someone likes the book or not (obviously, some people like or dislike it for other reasons, but in my experience, this is what I've found).
I know I already made a top 3..but I'm going to have to add Little Women to the list for a top 4 :)
Hmmm, I think my top 3 would be:Catcher In The Rye
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
To Kill A Mockingbird
I know we're only supposed to choose 3 but I'm also going to say Great Expectations. I noticed in the 'books you loathed' thread so many people mentioned that but I actually really enjoyed it and think it deserves some love!
The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Secret Garden (I know its a kids book but it's still one of my favorites!)
I loved the Secret Garden, one of the greatest children books of all time for sure. The movie was really sweet too.
I FINALLY read Pride and Prejudice!! How did I go my whole life without reading that one?! So glad that I did.
1. The Brothers Karamazov2. Jane Eyre
3. Anna Karenina
I do also love most of Jane Austen's books (I think Emma would have to be my favorite), and I really want to read a lot of Dicken's books (all I've read is A Christmas Carol).
That's a tough one, most of my favourite books are classics. My absolute favourites:1. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass
2. The Catcher in the Rye
3. The Picture of Dorian Gray
I still have a lot on my list of books to read but three of my favorites are1. East of Eden
2. To Kill a Mockingbird
3. The Old Man and The Sea
So I'm trying to find the best translations of Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think that we should do a whole bunch of threads like this..like..our top 3 YA novels, or books of all time, etc..just so we can get some more recommendations! :)
