Ms. Okes's Classes 2012 discussion
What is one of your favorite books? Why?

Tyler Baldwin

The book follows symbologist Robert Langdon trying to solve the disappearance of one of his friends. He is soon thrust into a race against time to uncover an ancient symbol to have his friend released. He then must run all around our nation's capital to uncover the mystery of the symbol.
I love this book due to its extreme attention to detail and history. While this can throw some off, I found that it added another layer to the story. I also love how Dan Brown can find ancient Masonic symbols in the most unlikely of places and add them to his book. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys unraveling the mysteries of our nation's founding and government.
Rated: V, C, and R for violence, language, and religion.

The book is about young inner city kids who have to fight through adversity and make it. The main character Ponyboy is the youngest and smallest in the group and is always trying to own up and be a part.

Someone Like You is about two girls, Halley and Scarlett, who have been best friends for years. Scarlett is known as the popular one; Halley as the shy one. But soon after the beginning of their junior year, their lives were turned upside. First, Scarlett's boyfriend dies in a motorcycle accident; soon after, Scarlett finds out she's pregnant with his baby.
The main theme of this book is that no matter what may happen or how drastic changes are made, friendship will withstand anything. It may bend under pressure, but their promise lasts forever.

How difficult was it to have new questions brought up? Were they answered by the end of the book, or were you left hanging?

Many people have trouble tracking the characters in part because of the society's rules on calling people by their titles. Ex: Miss Bennett is only Jane until she is married. Her younger sisters are called Miss Elizabeth, etc.

I did not know this was a book. Is the movie of the same name based on it? I loved the movie, but usually I believe books that came first are better.

However, every book has a purpose, even if you don't love it. The Marriage Bureau for Rich People is a good example. This novel interested me because it showcased India's cultural rules about relationships and marriage. It led me to more questions that I wanted answered, and a great chance to research and talk to my Indian friends.
