Kataklicik | 714 comments Nazmi, berapa hari sudah saya bertemu rakan karib suami yang baru laaa ni tahu saya ni orang Rawa. Dia kata, Abahnya orang Rawa, Maknya orang Pattani. Tapi dalam keluarganya, tidak ada lagi yang bertutur Bahasa Rawa, adat pun tak kenal dah.

Saya terpaku sekejap (tengah kenduri orang kahwin, tengtengah bising tu, terasa macam out-of-body experience pulak haha)sebab generasi saya pun dah ramai tak bercakap Rawa. AbahMak saya masih pekat lagi bertutur Bahasa Rawa, kampung di Tapah pun memang tak adalah kedengaran yang berbahasa Perak, semuanya pekat Bahasa Rawa. Tapi tiba-tiba saya sayu (tengtengah orang kahwin ni!) sebab walau kami orang Rawa ni proudly adaptable dengan keadaan sekeliling, teras adat dan bahasa cepat sangat lupa.

I guess it's inevitable. Tapi let's undergo that inevitability kicking and screaming, eh?

Like he said, more a scrapbook of the tv series than anything else. Tapi photos are beautiful. Terasa macam stalker going through friends' photos on Facebook of their holidays. Enjoyed it.

dalam buku Language In Danger ada disebut ttg kepupusan bahasa2 etnik ni hingga ada bahasa etnik yg ditutur bawah 10 penutur. nampaknya bahasa seperti bahasa rawa akan pupus. jadi kataklicik kena buat dokumentasi secepat mungkin - susun kamus ringkas atau buat rakaman audio dgn org lama2 :)

Kataklicik | 714 comments The Rao language is still widely spoken di Tanah Rao, where the keturunan come from (in Sumatera) - but the diaspora number more than the 'real Rao people', so the disappearing act relates more to the diaspora lah. The danger begins with the dilution of the language - the invasion of not only proper Bahasa Melayu but also of Perakspeak, or Selangorspeak, into the spoken language. Some may think Rao and Minangspeak are the same but no, there are similarities but different kettle of fish altogether lah.

I suppose that is why the Malaysian Chinese and the Malaysian Indians beriya-iya nak kekalkan sekolah aliran bahasa deme. Because there is always the danger of adapting to and adopting a culture so totally different than theirs, sampai tak ingat the blood, sweat and tears, korban tok nenek deme dulu. Kita beriya nak sekolah kebangsaan, which I think is a brilliant way of instigating a love and a patriotism for the country, tapi di sekolah kebangsaan ini lah anak-anak kita belajar melupakan bahasa etnik mereka.

Macam kami adik-beradik lah. Dah tak berbahasa Rao, boleh paham, tapi tak pandai nak bercakap Rao. Entah lah.

Kataklicik | 714 comments 30. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

Feel free to cllick for review. Have you seen the movie? 1984 - Tom Howell as Ponyboy Curtis. Rob Lowe as Sodapop Curtis. Patrick Swayze as their eldest brother, Darry Curtis. Emilio Estevez was Two-Bit. Matt Dillon as Dallas. Ralph Macchio as Johnny Cade. Tom Cruise as Sodapop's bestfriend Steve. It even had Leif Garret. A veritable eye-candy fest, especially to an impressionable 14-year-old (which I was, then.)

Love this book.

Kataklicik | 714 comments Alas, Kak Ninot, tak ada! The legends I grew up with were very much Melayu in nature, and very much influenced by whatever I could get my hands on to read... Kita generasi komersial la...! ;'(
