Merrick stalked back into the forest, he had returned with his empty wheel barrow ready to shop up some more chunks of wood. He wiped his brow and took off his gloves, sitting down beside a tree. As he sat he was concealed by the tall grass so he took this opportunity to take a rest.
Rowan felt that after she was done working, she should go into the woods. She climbed one of her favorite trees and sat there hidden, until a boy looking to be about her age, sat underneath the tree. She watched him curiously.
Merrick heard something scuttle above him but he ignored it, thinking it would probably be a squirrel or something. He had a handful of small wood chippings in his pocket and he began to throw them into the grass, he sniffed and sighed from boredom as he aimed the wood chippings to the tops of the grass.
Rowan tried to be as quiet as she could, but a bug fleww up her nose, and she sneezed. She gripped the branch for balance.
Merrik narrowed his eyes and looked upwards ''What the-?'' he cocked his head to one side, squinting into the tree tops to try and identify the small person hiding behind the branches.
Rowan tried to make herself smaller, she knew that he saw her already, but maybe he thought that she was a big bird or something. This is the downside to being tall.
((Sooooo sorry! Notifs are messed up..))Merrik rolled his eyes ''I'm not stupid you know'' he shook his head as he tried to climb further up the tree ''Look you can't keep slacking work, Jarek!'' he called up, thinking it was his close friend Jarek hiding from the peacekeepers.
She screamed and fell out of the tree back wards, only a few branches broke her fall. Luckily they weren't high up.
(aww you weren't in a bad mood!)Merrik stumbled at her scream and fell backwards onto the long grass, he breathed out heavily ''So I take- it you- aren't a guy- then'' he asked loudly, taking large gulps of breath in between words. Her scream definitely sounded like a girls but she still hadn't revealed her identity to him.
He blinked several times, taking in her face ''I don't-t r-recognise you'' he stuttered, realizing how pretty she was and how rude he acted.
She grabbed the edges of her shirt, a habit."I... me either." she didn't even know if that would make sense.
He chuckled softly ''You gonna tell me your name? Or just fidget with your shirt..'' he turned around, back to his original position leaning against the tree.
''You don't have to apologize'' he laughed a littler louder ''Well Rowan.. I'm Merrik'' he flickered his eyes to the field ahead ''I seriously can't take another load back.. I'm flat out tired'' his forehead glistened with sweat contrasting against his tanned skin.
"I don't usually work the whole day either. Although, you look a lot more tired than me." She said leaning up against the nearest tree.
He smiled, bearing his teeth ''I'm just too tired to do anything, not so tired to do anything else'' he chuckled, he loved running and so badly wanted to run away from everything. From the Hunger Games. But he couldn't. Merrick shook his head and turned to Rowan ''How old are you? You are from this district right?'' he raised an eyebrow, hoping her to not be a runaway of some sort.
"Well. I am 16 and no i am not a runaway, although i always think about doing it." She looked at the ground.
He raised an eyebrow ''Dont.'' he replied bluntly, turning around the slowly walk back to the village.
He looked at her and noticed her blush ''I'm sorry.. just-'' he didn't really know why he was being so harsh with her, he just couldn't bear to see someone else die who didn't even take part in the games. ''Sorry.'' he mumbled.
She only nodded. "I was thinking i should. Life here and with the games is never going to turn out good."
He nodded back ''I understand.. but resorting to running away can't be any good. You'll die that way, with no dignity'' he bit his lip ''Please don't'' he looked at her seriously.
She scrunched her nose."I'd die here with less dignity then out there." She pointed outside the district. "And why would you care?"
''I-I Don't.'' he replied stubbornly. Truth be told this girl was starting to grow on her and the thought of her being killed by the peace keepers sent goosebumps down his arm.
She sighed."I can tell you fo, unless stuttering is naturally in your genes." She kicked a pile of leaves.
He smiled at her sarcastically ''No.'' he snapped ''Actually, do what you want. Like you said.. why would I care.'' he replied as he turned to walk away again.
She frowned."Sorry. I didn't mean to sound mean. I just don't have m,any people to be nice too." She said trying to mkake him come back.
He turned around ''Whats wrong?'' he asked, sensing her discomfort. ''Sorry as well'' he gulped, turning around to face her.
"Nothing really. Just that you seem too nice. Everyone seems to hate me, but you? You don't seem to." she said folding her arms.
''Whats to hate?'' he looked confused and he frowned ''You aren't somebody to hate..'' he whispered.
He raised his eyebrows at her ''You 'did things'?'' he asked, gesturing for them both to sit back town beside the tree.
She followed him and sat under the tree biting her lip. "Not BAD things, but you know, only a bit of rebeliion."
He stared at her for a moment, knowing it was pretty much illegal to rebel against the capitol ''Excuse me? You're a rebellion?'' he hissed.
She scrunched her nose again."That's what everyone says. I can at least knock 5 guys out with a log from my firplace."
''I don't doubt that'' he laughed ''But seriously.. rebelling? You could get yourself killed!'' he gulped. looking at her with concerned eyes.
