Penny Hello
I have just joined the group as I read a lot of crime and thrillers and thought it might be fun to hear others opinions and get new books to read.
I live in England with my family plus a dog and 4 cats. I read just about anyone and everyone but dont like too much gore, stuff like Elisabeth George, Susan Hill, Harlen Coben, Linwood Barclay, Louise Penny, Donna Leon, Ann Cleeves, Martin Edwards - and I could go on and on. Have recently discovered the 'cozy' a term I had not come across before and have enjoyed some of those but others I find a little too fluffy!! Many are not available in England and seem to be US based. I also like historical crime such as C J Sansom and Susanna Gregory. Sometimes I have to make myself read other stuff as I find I have read so much crime I need a break from the dark side!!
best wishes
Penny

Hi Penny, welcome. I prefer the less gory things too. Serial killers freak me out!

I'm sure you'll find lots of recommendations here.

Welcome Penny. I enjoy a good cozy too but some are too fluffy. Have you tried M.C. Beaton Hamish McBeth series or Martin Walker Bruno series? Of course there are the classics like Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and Ngiao Marsh.

Bill Welcome, Penny.. Donna Leon and CJ Sansom are two favourites of mine. You might like Jane Haddam as well..

Catherine | 17 comments ok...so I'm having a moment! what is a "cozy"?!?!?!?

where about in England are you from? I am in Shaftesbury, DOrset...well actually 4 miles outside in a village called Hartgrove, East Orchard

Hi Catherine, a "cozy" is a lighter mystery, no gore or sex, and usually has an amateur sleuth as the central character. Cats, Tea, and Knitting are often big players too, lol.

Oh! Well I've read lots of those!

Thanks for the definition! :)

Several years ago, I vacationed in London--I loved it! If I ever win the lottery, I might move there. Alan Zacher, author of "I'm No P. I."

Teresa (teresa_bowen) Hi Penny,
It's always good to see another person from the UK joining in here. Your favourites list looks a lot like mine except I do like the gory stuff as well. I know what you mean about occasionally having to read something else in order to get a break from the dark side. I'll pick up a book at random in library in order to discover something new. Sometimes I find authors to fall in love with, sometimes I can't even force myself to finish the book but it all reminds me to read more widely occasionally.

sorry for delay Catherine - have been away a few days. I am right up north in Durham - we live in the country but near the city of Durham. My kids regularly sing in the cathedral. Originally I am from the south coast though , I married a Geordie and ended up oop north!!
