This post is going to be a little different, it's not going to be about your experiences, but more about your opinions about something, in this case someone, Dill Harris.
Dill Harris is Scout's and Jem's friend who comes to visit his aunt Rachel during the summer, but besides that, what do you really know about him? What can you tell me about him, from the things he says, does, and the way he is? Tell me as much as possible about him, but DO NOT give me answers directly from the book, I want to hear what YOU think... ok?
Don't forget to comment on your classmates's stories and ideas too...

Dill Harris is a boy who care about his friends, he is abandoned from his parents and maybe, because of this he is naughty. I mean... he isn't with his father and this means that his mother work all day (maybe all night) and I think he is all day alone or with friends, in the street after school, but even if he isn't alone or not, he is a good boy, very smart and curious. I like him since he cover Jem with a lie, but I think he is the best friend because he really cared Jem.

Raquelgonzalez | 62 comments Well, Dill Harry is a boy who was passed the summer with his aunt, he's from is Meridian, always in the vacation he join to the others children, playing with them in the back yard, he didn't say anything about his father when Atticus question him, maybe his father's doesn't live with him, or when He was a child left him, he doesn't has the opportunity to know him, He's extremely intelligent , he gave the idea to play making Boo Radley come out,a boy who quickly became children's chief playmate.he has a lot of imagination, it's very strong he pass a lot of time with his aunt, normally in summer vacation it's a good time to share and stay at home with your family or go out with them...! maybe he's a boy who didn't received a lot of atention , he ground alone with his adventures and his parents didn't know. what he was doing, they don't have enought time . to do in correctly form their responsabilities how fathers have to do!

Rosana Ferreira | 80 comments Dill Harris is a good boy who likes adventures especially with his friends Jem and Scout, for me his life´s way is mysterious because he says he doesn´t live with his mother and father, he goes every summer to his aunt´s house, that is estrange, I wonder why does he go for that time and what does he do in his aunt´s house, maybe he comes for vacation, maybe he is saying the true or maybe not, but I think he needs the love and orientation of his family, because all children need the care of the family.

message 6: by Camila (new)

Camila | 65 comments Well, I think Dill Harries is a boy who have a difficult life, I realize that, because is strange that every summer he go to his Aunt house, I don`t know why yet, but maybe he doesn`t have a house, maybe he live with some different families so he move and move every time… I think he have a lot of imagination because he really liked to know more and more about Boo Radley, maybe he doesn`t have friends so he enjoy very much being with Scout and Jem.
In the story shows that he is a curiously boy, he is a little liar, he was older than Scout but he was shorter than her, I think maybe he passed by some difficult situation, he haven`t an easy life, he said that he haven`t a father but then when he returned again he said that he worked with his father, that`s very strange…
But I think that he is a good boy too, he thinks in the future because he had already known that he want to married with Scout. I like him.

I agree with you… I also think that his life`s way is mysterious because he said some lies about his life, about his father.. We don`t really know what happened to his father, what happened to his family, where he really lives… maybe there is something that he doesn`t want anybody know about him, about his life. I think he is acting by this way just because he thinks that if he say how is his true life nobody would want to be with him. I think that.

Karen Portillo | 73 comments Well, Dill Harris is a boy who in the summer come with his aunt, we don't know why, He's curious, like all children; He wants to have adventures, that's good, because normal children want to have that, so, maybe He need someone to help him or to instruction him, sometimes we don't know about dangers when we are children, so, He has his aunt, but practically He live on street, maybe He need a mother or father, we don't know about his father too, because He said that He has a father, but He don't want to talk so much about, so He has a mother, but why He come all summer in Maycomb, that's the question, maybe his mother don't have enough time, or she work a lot, or maybe She don't want to care Dill, because we know that many mother don't want to care they children, they only think of themselves, so, it can be too, so I hope in other chapter we going to know more about Dill life's.

Yes! He's so intelligent! He made a perfectly plane for Boo Radley come out, I mean, if you talk with him, if you said something to him, He going to do, because He's a Children, and children are innocent, so, He going to pay attention at you.

message 10: by Rociog (last edited Jul 01, 2012 02:39PM) (new)

Rociog (rocinhagon) | 68 comments Mmm, Charles Baker Harris, well-known as Dill appears as the friend of Jem and Scout, during childhood we call friend to anyone who plays a game with us; Dill is a bit different than a friend because it seems he likes to manipulate Jem and Scout, each idea he gave them to play were able to get them in trouble. Evidently, he's very curious, in the first chapter he gave Jem a dare, so they began the bothering toward Boo.
I realized he likes just to see the consequences of an action, I mean, he makes Jem and Scout to do the worst parts of his plans and he just watches from a safe place.
Absolutely he's a liar, he says lies in each opportunity, I think it is to catch the attention of his friends, maybe to feel superior and obviously to make them feel inferior; I know he's a child but I wonder how he's being taught in Meridian.
Even being younger than Jem he behaves as a bad example for him and it seems Jem really admires him because he thinks as an older boy. He's able to discount anyone who doesn't agree with his ideas, he is growing with different people, his life is unstable, nobody really cares about him, and he tries to control the ones to pay attention on him.
He doesn't respect even adults, I might think that's why he pass from relative to relative. He's like the ones who only wants to explore strange things, to search into the darkness and when someone catches him, he uses his couple of lies to get out of the trouble.

Andrea Portillo | 30 comments Well, Dill is a mischievous little boy, who every summer goes with his aunt, he’s very curious and likes to play with his friend Jem and Scout. He likes to have fun like all the children, also he is a little liar, but kids are so... He has great imagination and loves everything related with ‘Boo Radley’’
I think his life is not easy, because he said he does not live with his father and mother, and it is strange that every summer he goes with his aunt, maybe he is alone all day and his parents work hard and have no time to be with him or maybe they do not give enough attention he needs.
I think children should grow up with parents, they have to take care of their children for are formed as a person, everyone needs the support of our parents, anyway we do not really know what is the situation of Dill, but I think that his life is mysterious.

Elina | 28 comments Charles Baker Harris is the real name but his nickname is Dill , he only know not dead his father and them nothing ,I think when he is bad is because he only want to draw attention but he not only think in he, he worry too in Jem and Scout because they're his best friend .
He was curiosity, creative and proud about what he know.

" maybe She don't want to care Dill, because we know that many mother don't want to care they children, they only think of themselves "

With these words we can realize the role of the parents in the life of a child.
Sadly, there are many parents that don't care about the ones who THEY brought to this world, I think it shouldn't be so. It is true that there are women who didn't want to be pregnant, but it happened and the thing was done; they should take the responsibility.
We should ask ourselves what we would have done without our mothers, we wouldn't have been the same person.
Then what I'm trying to say is that Dill could have been different -maybe more educated and respectful- if he life was more stable.
By the other hand, almost each one of us know someone who has a stable familiar relationship but he/she doesn't behave as he/she should. It is a little confusing but in both cases the parents do something wrong.

message 14: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 55 comments Charles Baker Harris, a.k.a. Dill, is a very important character in the book, because is the one who has the ideas for the adventures.
He goes to Maycomb every summer to see his aunt, but we have never seen his parents there, sometime looks like Dill knows almost nothing about them, although he doesn't like when someone speaks badly of them. That's normal -who does?- but it gives the impression that his parents, if he has some, are very negligent; it is said also that he actually doesn't have a home and moves from relative to relative, who are too poor to take care of the boy, or maybe doesn't like him because he's a bit naughty and liar.
He has a kind of obsession to Boo, and wants to know everything about him, he often gets in trouble because of that (Boo is a sort of taboo subject in town) but it seems like Jem and Scout usually get the major punishments.
But Dill isn't bad, he's just a child who needs attention and someone who can teach him what's right and what's wrong.

I wouldn't call that "manipulation" because to me, Jem and Scout would have done all this anyway. I mean, they were too curious and went to the Radley's place willingly.
I also desagree with that Dill leaves Jem and Scout alone when they have problems. He saves them, but yes, he lies a lot, but we must remember that he's a child, and children doesn't know how to take the responsability of the consequences of their actions on other people, and there's nobody who, as you said, really cares about him and teach him; that is what he needs.

message 16: by Rosana (new)

Rosana Ferreira | 80 comments Yes Rocio you said a good point to analyze, the role of the parents, sometime the parents advise us about our friends, they don´t want that we have a relationship with a friend who have a bad behavior, that is common in the majority of them, but what happen with us, sometimes they see the problem and we don´t or we don´t want to see, I think our parents have the responsibility for us, but when we do something that we shouldn´t do, the consequence of our acts is our responsibility not of them. I think.

message 17: by Rosana (new)

Rosana Ferreira | 80 comments I agree with Rebecca because in Dill´s case he is not a bad boy he only need more attention, and he´s behavior is similar of many children who live in the downtown, they do all things bad and good, and anybody care them, I think these kind of children if they continue growing up so, and they aren´t controlled, I imagine the future of our society, it could be very bad.

I think is truth that you said.. Maybe He each summer has company of his aunt but we can be positive about he is alone in his house in Mississippi.

I like that you said! Dill really need someone, an adult who teach him how care himself when is necesary, because lies aren't solution when the situation implies your physical body !

message 21: by Juana (new)

Juana | 54 comments Dill is a kind of friend that everyone has, or maybe should have, to make your life an adventure.. Dill's life is a mystery, because no one knows who are his parents and what do they do. He also likes to lie, maybe there's something inside him, in his heart that takes him to lie. He has a lot of imagination, and invents many plays and histories... He moves every summer, I can't say why, but I guess his mother leaves him to live with a relative because he's so disobedient and she can't take care of him... He's very creative, I think he's normal like another boys, he just need a person to lead him toward a good education...I'm sorry for him, because he maybe doesn't feel the love of her mother or doesn't have the image of a father...so, he looks for adventures to pass the time or call the attention of someone...It's good the imagination and when we are children we like to do new things, but there's a limit... And sometimes Dill makes his friends to get in trouble... Someone with enough patience has to educate him!

message 22: by Juana (new)

Juana | 54 comments Raquel said ''I considered those time are unique because you discover the world with your friends and prove and you wish experiment all around you, it's funny remember how can be the childrens imagination ...'' So do I Raquel, I think those moments we never forget, so we must have patience with children, let them to play, to learn about the things. Most of the children aren't quiet...they play all the time, so , pay attention about danger things they can do..

message 23: by Juana (new)

Juana | 54 comments Rosana said.. ''the consequence of our acts is our responsibility not of them.'' I think that the consequences of those acts we did it depends of how was the education that our parents gave us... It's easy to do what they do even if they say that it´s not good...Sometimes adults are so, they say one thing but they make another...

message 24: by Kathia (new)

Kathia Roman | 58 comments Dill was a special child, wanted to call the attention of the other people, he liked to play and adventure, when he was among feels problems lies used to save
was intelligent and friendly independent, was always the head of all things
I think it is a child who needs the support of their parents, to grow and be better person, but it seems they are not interested in your child, and seeks to fill that void right through adventures
Parents often must make time for their children without this may influence your life

I agree, parents play an important role in the life of each as they guide us to make our decisions based on things we were taught,
Dill is not bad, just have to be educated and learn a lot more how to behave and choose the right thing for him and his future
