Watson is the perfect companion for Holmes. He 'has the great gift of silence, which makes him quite invaluable as a companion', as is said by Holmes. Also, he simply cannot resist coming with Holmes on all of his adventures, and helps him whenever possible. I love how they portrayed Watson in the movie. He is always trying to keep Holmes out of trouble, which he gets into A LOT. The movie was very well done. Jude Law did a fantastic job with Watson.
Watson is amazing, I would be so made at a friend if they treated me like Holmes treats Watson at some points.
Oh yes, I agree Watson is a wonderful friend because Sherlock can at times be a bit of an jerk. I thought the movie Watson was quite the nice change in how we normally see Watson. I also think the Watson in the BBC Sherlock is very well done and interesting companion that works.
Oh hold on. I agree, Watson in the movie is excellent. But I don't like BBC Watson. :P I don't like what they're doing to Sherlock Holmes. It just wasn't meant to be modernised. And oh god I REALLY REALLY hate what they did to Irene Adler on BBC. I wanna slap someone for that.
I gather in the US version Lucy Liu is playing Watson. What do you think about a female version of Watson? Can it work?
See I like tthe BBC Sherlock both Sherlock and John. I don't like what most people do with Irene Adler but I enjoyed their show.
And I am thinking about watching Elementry but I don't what they did with Watson. I think Benedict Cumberbatch had it right when he said that it will now have sexual tension with will take away from the friendship.
That was my main concern too. I don't know why they feel this is necessary to the audience. We can be entertained without romance / sex.
Alsjem I agree with your statement about being entertained without romance/sex. I enjoy the murder scifi mystery series In Death by J.D. Robb but I dislike the sex scenes. Just get back to the bloodly murder please! Sadly anytime something is on the television they think it needs sex/romance. I guess for us silly girls. :P
Hello! I have only seen 3: Brett series, BBC series and RDJ movies. Of these 3, my favourite is Martin Freeman :)
There is going to be a romance theme because it is in every male/female friendship. Look at you and you friends that are the other gender. It will always be there.
If they're going to make a female Watson, why not make a female Holmes too?I think that would be more interesting.

That's not true, and you're ignoring other sexualities by saying that.
I think Sherlock Holmes is asexual, though I guess it's possible that they would decide to portray him some other way.
Does not matter what Holmes does. Watson has feelings and that can cause the sexual tension. And because it is American made there is going to be that tension anyways because Americans do not know what to make things without it. I will say that I am American but that it is true that Americans can not make a show without romance/sex in it.
Sadly I agree with you Krystal. In my opinion, many excellent books and movies have been lessen with the addition of a romance. If alien invaders or a serial killer is roaming about, I won't be considering sex with Bob. I will be thinking survival. That is another thing that makes me frown, women are either bitches or twits in exciting movies for the most part. And I will end my rant there.
Considering I have always viewed Holmes as fairly asexual, I think the US version will be just two people working together. At least, that is my hope.It premieres next Thursday, and I will definitely watch it to get a feel for where they may go with it.
@ Jeni, I would love for you to be right. I would love for Elementary to be at lot like the original Holmes and Watson that is why BBC's Sherlock is doing so well. So lets keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
can't wait to hear all about Elementary when it airs in the US. Anyone know if its likely to be shown in the UK?
I love Martin Freeman as a modern day Watson. But for the Victorian Watson then I think David Burke as a younger Watson and Edward Hardwicke as an older one are the best.

He was fantastic as Holmes. Seemingly he kept extensive notes on Holmes from the books (his mannerisms, what he ate - pretty much everything) and was always on the look out for anything he felt wasn't being true to the character or the books.

I started out with mixed feelings about Martin Freeman as Watson, but I really like him now. He's done a good job with shaping his character. :) Holy muffins, I am dying for more BBC Sherlock... D:
One thing I love about Law is that I feel he's one of the few Watsons who got the feel of him right. He's a doctor, not a bumbling idiot, and the fair sex is his department. I like Freeman, but I feel that his Watson is very bleak and jaded. He lacks the necessary heart to counter Holmes's coldness. If anyone fills that role, it's Molly and Mrs Hudson.
I watched one episode of Elementary (I need to catch up.) and found Liu's Watson pretty much a standard reluctant sidekick with far too much emotional baggage.
In my opinion, the Burke/Hardwicke duo is the best I've seen.
Yes, I completely agree about Law. :) Plus, I love how he's like Holmes's companion, and keeps him out of trouble when he's being reckless in his Holmes-y daze. XD
Molly has grown on me, too. At first I was just like Holmes, rolling my eyes and thinking about how annoyingly persistent she is, because he's SHERLOCK after all. You just can't do that with him. But now I appreciate her ability of put up with him and still care for him in her subtle, quiet way.
Yeah, I agree that Freeman is more leaning towards... human...and he can be rather impatient with Holmes's ways, like people usually are. But I think he shows that even though he doesn't quite get Sherlock, a part of him understands him more than most people and sees through his carefully-constructed emotional walls.
Mel needs to watch Elementary!!! :()

Might almost call him a Companion with a capital C, a la Doctor Who. It's not good for Holmes to be alone. He would blow things up. xD
I like Freeman's Watson it works with Cumberbatch as Holmes. But David Buke and Edward Hardwicke are the best.
How come BBC Watson does not have a beard? :))

Oh. I was referring to Martin Freeman :) It would be funny though if he had one LOL
Sorry. LOL. Zoning out here. Haha. Soryy I didn't notice the reply. :))
My main picture of Watson is Nigel Bruce. I think his character is a bit too bumbling, but he is the one I 'see' when I read the stories. Love Freeman and Law. The best thing about Watson is that he is the filter that we see Sherlock through. He is the narrater, blogger, etc...
As a doctor, he is a smart man in his own right. Sherlock would not suffer fools around him. I can't stand it when they Watson as an idiot. On this point I think Jude Law does the best.
