Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments We are a friendly lot here and there is something for everyone.

Please start by adding a post to our ‘Introduce Yourself ‘ thread. We are a nosey lot and would love to know who you are, what you like to read (and write), where you live and what you drink, eat, wear and grow.

This thread meanders off-topic quite a bit but as soon as a new member comes along our friendly but bonkers members soon appear to give you a warm welcome.

Of course you don’t have to introduce yourself if you prefer. You could head off to Meet The Authors, check out our monthly book selections. check out the New releases or play some Group Games.

Our group writing exercises seem to have become a regular. It is great fun and if you are too late to submit an entry you should be able to vote.

The Author Zone is going great guns. This is not just for authors by any means but gives them a place where they can talk about publishing challenges and resources. It is a no-promo zone!

Even if you don’t feel ready to post something you are most welcome to sit back and watch the fun.

This forum is very lightly moderated (hardly noticeable), occasionally we will ask you to keep a particular thread on topic and we have a few simple rules about author threads and new releases.

There are plenty of ebook related threads, author related discussions including a debate on the merits of KDP Select and a place to share your musical taste.

If you have any problems you can post questions on the threads or visit our Agony Aunt and someone will come along and help. If you would rather not ask your question publicly by all means send a personal message (PM) to Patti or myself and we will try to help.

The plan is to clear the Introductions thread monthly to see if it makes things a bit easier for new members. Old Introductions can be found in the archive.

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 286 comments Hi all,

I'm new here so thought i would introduce myself...

I'm Sarah, owned my kindle touch for just 2 months and been on goodreads about 6 weeks but only just learning the ropes. I'm completely obsessed with my kindle and have spent a ridiculous amount on books these past two months. I think i'm as obsessed with collecting lists 'to-read' as i am reading them!
In case it's relevant - i'm 30 years old, mother of a 4 year old who i'm looking after (when i'm not reading!) until he starts school in September. Have just relocated back to Warwickshire from the north east this summer.
I have an MA in philosophy but at the moment read mostly easy 'read in a day' books as it tends to be difficult to concentrate on much else with a hyperactive 4 year old around! Oh and if i find a book less than a pound that gets my attention too, just can't afford to spend £5 on a book that i read in a day!
Would love to make some goodreads friends and join the fun if you'll have me!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56524 comments Welcome Sarah!

Sounds like you'll be really interested in our freebie section.
Find it here.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

You'll also find lots and lots of excellent but very inexpensive books in our author threads and in the recommended books section.

There's also lots of bonkersishness all over the place in here.

I'm sure you'll feel as at home as we all do very soon. Great to have you aboard!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Hi Sarah, Welcome to the group. I have a feeling you are going to like it here. It takes a bit of getting used to but is worth it. Most of the regulars seem to hang around the 'Morning' thread (don't ask!), but we have a daily freebee thread and when a bargain is found it gets posted pretty quick.

If you need help just ask!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56524 comments Yep, please do. We love being helpful in here. :)

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1777 comments Hi Sarah - crikey I miss Warwickshire. I went to uni in Birmingham in the late 90s / early 00s, and then moved on to Warwick uni for my PGCE. My Mum's side of the family is from the Stratford on Avon area, and my sister's wound up working at the Birthplace Trust.

And if it's any consolation on the MA, I have an MPhil but only write short stories as it's all I have time for with a full-time job, acting and a demanding cat!

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Hi Sarah and welcome. There's lots to absorb here, but we are a friendly crowd, so don't be afraid to shout for help.

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments Hi Marc Nash Londoner here. Just become active on GR after finally figuring out how some of it works! Avid reader as well as kindle author and with the odd opinion or two on most things ;-)

Worked in music retail for 20 years so looking forward to your music related threads. Now work for an NGO monitoring censorship around the world. Great as both jobs are, I would rather just write, write write!

Nah - I'm from Portsmouth originally and now live in Cornwall. Kew is the name that I go by on amazon and other forums, so I've put it in brackets here to identify myself to those who know me from other forums. It's not very imaginative, KEW are my initials!

I have been to Kew Gardens a couple of time, lovely place!

Born in Holloway (not the women's prison I hasten to add), grew up in Wembley, now live in Edgware :-) #marc'smagicalmysterytour

Ah, in Greater London. I was in Eltham, Greenwich but lived all my childhood till I was eighteen right in the centre of the City's square mile, opposite the Bank of England next to the Mansion House. The Lord Mayor of London was my next door neighbour. Used to knock on their door but no one answered!

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments wow, impressive! It's been suburbia all the way for me...

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Marc wrote: "wow, impressive! It's been suburbia all the way for me..."

Not that impressive...my parents were housekeepers and we had a small flat on the top floor which didn't have a toilet so we had to use the buildings public ones :0(
Looking back it's not a great place for a child to grow up.
I couldn't wait to get a normal home with a toilet lol.

message 34: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments you had me going, thought you were dead posho with that address! :-)

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Well the City isn't really a residential area. I suppose the nearest residential bit is the Barbican but I wouldn't want to live there...too much of a concrete jungle.
Used to be quite funny when people asked your address and you told them it was Lombard Street. Or on the odd occassion when I dragged some poor unsuspecting boyfriend home through the huge iron gates which must be about fifteen foot tall.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments A woman I work with grew up living in Dublin Zoo - her father was one of the keepers. I can't imagine what that was like...

message 37: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1777 comments Hi Marc! I'm a Barnes dweller, though I grew up in the New Forest (not too far from Portsmouth, where my father grew up, Karen!).

And I work on Moorgate, just down the road from the Bank of England. It's a small world!

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Gingerlily (or Cyberlily..) wrote: "A woman I work with grew up living in Dublin Zoo - her father was one of the keepers. I can't imagine what that was like..."

I used to go to school in Aldgate and a couple of the other kids used to live in the Tower of London. Their fathers were in the army not beefeaters or yeoman warders. That must have been an experience. I had visited them a couple of times...they had to collect you at the gate as you couldn't just walk in. I don't think it occurs to tourists that people actually live there.
I know no one lives in my old building now as they use a security firm after my mum and dad retired. To add insult to injury they put in a toilet after we were told it couldn't be done! That really upset my mum. I don't suppose there are any housekeepers left now in the City, we must of been amongst the last.
